4 port usb hub

I have just fitted the above to my elderly neighbours older computer because
he needed a new keyboard and it had a usb connection and he did not have
enough usb sockets. I bought a cheap Prostat 4 port usb hub 1.1 version
which works well. The only problem is that when booting the computer windows
98SE wont boot up unless I disconnect the 4 port usb hub and then it is fine
and I reconnect it and all is well. I was wondering do I need the 2.0
version or what can I do????

Windows 98 Second Edition does not natively support USB 2.0x. It needs to be
supported with an add in card.

Yes, you need to buy a add in card and open the case of your computer. The
add-in card must support USB 2.0x and must support Windows 98 Second Edition.
They are still out there. I bought one in New York City (Manhatten) at a
big electronics store there and it works great for me.

The following is an aside and may be of interest to some people. I grew up
in NYC or the City as New Yorkers call it and love to go and visit on
vacation when my funds allow and my folks still have a rental there and keep
a small spot in the back that they can stay when they check up on the
property. I usually stay with my friend Brian who now lives in Con.

Margie, agree with Ingeborg. Need more information about what is happening at
bootup. The machine is probably still looking for a PS2 connected ketyboard
at startup.
I am presently running a 98SE with a USB keyboard and USB Intellimouse
hooked into a 4 port usb hub with no problems.
This may work. Go into Devices after a successful boot and remove all the
keyboard drivers and let the machine redetect the keyboard. If you get a
message about not finding any .dll files they are usually located in
C:\windows\system\drivers or C\windows\system32\drivers

Let us know if that works. There are a few more things to try.

computer boots as far as the HP logo and then stops there. It is a HP
Pavilion 6611. Funny you should mention keyboards that is when the problem
started when he bought a new usb keyboard and didnt have enough usb sockets,
I will go into device manager and see if I can sort things out there. His
son just keeps telling him to buy a new computer but he says while this one
is going he is quite happy to use it and I say good on him. Many thanks.

If the keyboard has been connected to the new hub, then change things around
so that it is connected direct to the controller port, and something else
goes through the hub.

I had the same thing happen with my Belkin 4 port hub on my Windows 98se
machine. I used it for over a year with no problems. I simply unplugged the
device and one of the side plugs and then plugged them back in (every time I
turned machine on) and everything worked fine like that. My Belkin was a 2.0
and the Dell was a 1.1. Don't bother adding a card or buying anything else.
My Belkin was $30. First I got the yellow light and the device wasn't
recognized then after unplugging and plugging again I got the green light
and all was fine.
