Can you use a Win98 PC with dedicated printer attached as a print server for Vista laptop ?

I can set up my printer to share over network and Vista laptop sees printer
on network but Vista won't connect. Do I have to declare this legacy print
server a Win 98SE machine somehow ?

Probably more a Vista question and I have posted but thought someone must
have experience in trying this.

Yeah, I just had experience with this, but can't recall the exact steps.
Sorry. Thing is, you need Vista drivers for the printer, and when I tried to
install it manually as a local printer, as per the instructions I recall, it
turns out Vista comes preloaded with every DeskJet printer *except* 692C.
IOW I'm SOL.

But you might be luckier and find the right driver. Then, as I said, you
install in as a local printer (on some free LPT port) and then run some
command to bind it to the remote printer. Others say you can create a new
port while installing, but I'm not clear on that one and no literature I
have come across seems to be very clear, either.

because I enabled printer sharing, but it couldn't communicate with it.

I thought of a local driver, which I think Vista has, but I'm unclear how to
connect it to the Win98 print server.

This is actually a Vista issue. To connect a network printer using Vista
you need to create a local port and connect the printer to that port. See,

The item I've been trying to remember suggested using any available local
port (LPT1, for example), then mapping that to the printer address with,
IIRC, a netsh command. The method you posted is much more sensible.

Now for some reason my Win98SE computer will only show icons in low colour,
with Printer and HDD sharing activated. Strange but I can live with it.

As soon as I deactivate sharing on both HDD and Printer the icons return to
high colour.

Okay, it is not a memory issue. Thank you for your response. I will have to
ponder over this. Hopefully, someone else will have some better ideas. I
have downgraded from 2 gigabytes of memory to a 512 megabyte stick of ram in
order to primary use 98 Second Edition again because of all the DNS Pollution
that Dan K. discovered that affects NT products -- eg. 2000, XP, Server, etc.

What video card do you have and is the video card supported fully in both 98
Second Edition and Vista? I am pulling straws here and so am indeed open if
anyone has any better suggestions.

Ah, that may indeed be your problem. Ati currently only has the latest
driver updates for Ati Radeon 9500 and above. Since Windows Vista is so new
and to take full advantage of Windows Vista you will need an Ati Radeon 9500
or greater. I currently have in my machine a Radeon 9800 XT that I got on
Ebay and it works like a champ in Windows 98 Second Edition and in Windows XP
Professional Service Pack 3. It also fully supports Windows Vista. My
Windows Vista computer is a Toshiba Laptop.

As you can see Windows Vista cannot fully support an Ati Radeon card that is
less than the ATI Radeon 9500 series and that is why you are having color
issues. I don't know if it is in your budget but if it is then I would
update to an ATI Radeon 9800 XT graphics card and then you just use the
Windows ME driver for Windows 98 Second Edition and it works great and is
superior of course to the older Ati Radeon 9200. I had to upgrade from an
ATI Radeon 9000 graphics board to continue to get the latest video drivers to
support my computer gaming habbit.

I'm looking at a monitor which is attached to my Win98SE machine, and the
monitor is driven by the 9200 Radeon. Why are you bringing Vista into the
picture, it runs on a separate laptop ?

Sorry, for the confusion. The deal is that you need an Ati Radeon 9500 or
greater for the latest drivers and that is why your color is not showing up
prefectly because of what you are trying to do. Ati will only support Radeon
9500 or greater with drivers and since you are hooking 98 SE up to a Vista
laptop which requires a Radeon 9500 or greater then it makes perfect sense
why you cannot view the full color while connecting 98 SE with the Vista
computer. Sorry, I cannot make myself any clearer than that and if you still
don't get it then hopefully someone can explain my words more clearly.
