SD card reader problem

S

Sudy Nim

I tried to install a SDHC card reader/writer (Targus TGR-SD20) on my w98se. The
instructions state that the driver download software is w98 and ME compatible.
It installed but does not open. This is my first venture into the land of SD
cards so I have no idea as to the problem. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Does the device (the card reader) appear in device manager?

If it does, but if the card is not recognised when inserted, and if it's is
a high-capacity SD card then it might be formatted as NTFS rather than
FAT32. Windows98 will not recognise a NTFS partition. You should examine
the card in a XP or Vista machine to see if it has been set up as NTFS.

Being your SD reader relies on a USB connection you likely are
experiencing a driver issue!

You said you installed it but it does not open ... so I'd uninstall the
software, reboot and try re-installing software in SAFE MODE

To access safe mode: been a l-o-n-g time since doing this but I think
tapping F8 when rebooting will bring up a menu from which you choose
safe mode

Thank you for the replies. The program does not show up in the device manager
but it shows up in the Start Programs list. I think it is the wrong software
program as the user's manual refers to a different software number and name. For
w98 I download a program called Multimedia Card Reader Tool > Flash Ranger but
it should be AU6337(GBS) according to the user's manual also it is for w98 not
w98se. Customer service and downloads are listed under the company name
Mericury not Targus.

In Device Manager I get:
? Other devices
? Mass Storage Device (Drivers Not Installed)

The message in device manager indicates that the device did not install, so
it appears that you have not yet found the correct drivers.

You do not usually need anything appearing in the Start Programs list in
order to use the card reader - you simply need the device to be properly
installed and the card to be formatted so W98 can recognise it. What does
the program that installed in Start Programs actually do?

Ahh, just as suspected, a driver problem (the ?Mass Storage Device). The
Mass Storage device is the USB controller you need to view SD card
contents. You need to do the following:

1. download Win98 drivers from here
http://www.targusdigital.com/Sub_Support.asp
2. uninstall all software you installed for the SD reader
3. in Device Manager, uninstall EVERYTHING under ?Other Devices
NOTE, personally what I would do after this, as an added precaution
but not absolutely necessary is, boot into safe mode, open device
manager and look AGAIN under 'Other Devices' (if it exists, it may not).
If 'Other Devices' exist, uninstall [delete] them.
4. Reboot
5. unzip the new Targus drivers
6. install new drivers (prior to software install make sure the reader
is not connected unless specifically told to by Targus)
7. plug in your USB card reader, insert the SD card

Let us know how it goes, and BTW, remember Jeff Richards comments:
If the card came preformatted in NTFS, W98 will not see it (I've never
seen one that way though, nevertheless, it's important).
You should not need the Start Menu software to view your cards contents
so try this open explorer (NOT internet explorer), you see all your
drives ... and there should also be a new drive, the one showing the SD
card. Click on it to view contents!

PS: you may want to print these instructions out so a copy is handy for
you

Compact FlashT, Memory StickT & Secure DigitalT USB 2.0 Memory Card Readers This
driver is only necessary if you are running Windows 98 or Windows ME.

TGR-SD20 Windows 98 Driver

Both of these addresses are for the same "program" i.e. Multimedia Card Reader
Tool.
In Device Manager I get:
? Other devices
? Mass Storage Device (Drivers Not Installed)

And it shows up on the program list as, Multimedia Card Reader Tool > Flash
Ranger. when I click on it I get a window (Card Reader Utility) inside is
message (Device Not Found).

Nothing is added to Exploring - My Computer

I telephoned Merkury and they sent me to TGR-SD20 Windows 98 Driver, which is
the same as above two programs. I just got off the phone with them and they said
they would look into it and email me.

I am familiar with adding a driver or hardware, which works automatically, but
this appears to be a program and not a driver? I would guess that w98 is not
compatible with Card Readers?

I did try your procedure someone watching but the download
http://www.targusdigital.com/Sub_Support.asp
Is the same program as above with the same results.

I don't know what the utility is, but you probably don't need it. The driver
installation process should be a SETUP.EXE or some other EXE that you run
before you connect the reader. Then, when you connect the reader for the
first time, the driver installation will activate and install the drivers.

Unplug the reader. Remove the device from device manager and reboot. Examine
the contents of the file you downloaded for instructions or help files that
will indicate the process to follow.

Well, there can be a lot to getting USB devices to work with 98. Perhaps
Targus's drivers for 98 are not too good, or your PC is out of whack in
some way.

I have a USB flash card reader installed here, on Win98SE.
To get it to work I downloaded these drivers, following the instructions
EXACTLY!
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/drivers/nusb33e.exe

If you do this and the driver installs you will not see devices under
Device Manager 'other devices' and you will be able to view your SD
contents in explorer.

Let us know how you make out!

Yes, the w98se generic driver NUSB33E.EXE works!
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/drivers/nusb33e.exe

Thank you both Jeff Richards and "someone watching" your help is greatly
appreciated. BTW Targus never got back to me.

They are using NTFS on those cards too now?????

I'd just reformat it to Fat32.

Glad to hear it! BTW, have you since tried Targus's software you were
wanting to use (or perhaps it was uninstalled)? It you REALLY want that
software you m-i-g-h-t be able to use it with the generic driver,
although if I remember your messages correctly the software looked for a
specific? driver.

If you backup your current, GOOD [working] registry (start, run, scanregw
.... if prompted to backup again click yes and note your time and date in
case you need to go back to this registry), then you could fool around
installing/uninstalling Targus software to see if it works with the new
driver.

OR

If you are happy with what you have, leave it alone!

I really don't know what the Targus software did and have deleted it. I'll just
leave well enough alone I'm satisfied with nusb33e.exe. Also, as I have not
heard from Targus I must assume they do not have a working driver for w98!?
Thanks again.
