Backup, Image, Clone, Ghost????

OK, I can't believe it, but I finally have Win98SE installed and
running / looking exactly the way I want. Now, before I mess
something up, I'd like to make a ???? of the whole thing so that if I,
or something else, throws a monkey wrench in the works, I can just
Reformat C:\, copy this ???? to C:\, reboot and all is just as it was
when I created the ????.

Sorry for the ????'s, but I am a little confused about what you call
the ???? I'm after. Lots of threads - lots of conflicting use of the
various terms and terminology.

I have used Win98SE's native Backup facility to back up C:\, but I
assume this only backed up the data, and not the System info. I do
have Norton Ghost as well as Acronis True Image.

Which one should I use to create the ???? ?

Can I create the ???? on a USB 8GB Flash Drive?

Will I be able to accomplish my re-loadable / rebootable objective
from the Flash Drive?

The reason for the Flash Drive is that's all I've got that is
external, formatted FAT32 and works on the Win98SE USB 2.0 port. All
my big external HDD's are on my XP system and formatted NTFS.

I would expect to put a copy of the ???? on one of those drives for
safe keeping.

I've had great success using Drive Snapshot - the working demo is good
for 30 days - and it will work from an ordinary boot floppy.

Another alternative, is Drive Image XML,
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm, but you will need to run it
from a CD with Bart-PE installed.

Windows backup will back-up your entire C drive. However Windows copy does
not preserve short file names and backup cannot be run outside of Windows.

You say you have Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost, but you are asking
how to use them? Sounds fishy.

You probably want to make a "disk image" or perhaps a "partition image". If
you have one big C: drive, then the two types of images are almost the same.
However, the disk image will also contain the master boot record, whereas
the partition image may not. In either case, make a compressed image to
save space.

I have used both GHOST and TrueImage for years, and have come to prefer
TrueImage. But, the most recent GHOST might be betteer than the last one I
tried (GHOST 2003).

In any event, to detemrine whether you can use the USB drive requires that
you (1) try to make an image on it, (2) try to "see" the image, WITHOUT
using windows 98. Step (1) is obvious. Step (2) is needed to assure that
the bootable media provided by the backup vendor (in the case of modern
GHOST), or made by the user (in the case of TrueImage or older GHOST), can
see both the backup media (USB) as well as the internal hard drive.

My guess is that any GHOST less than 2003 will fail to see the USB drive,
and even 2003 may be unreliable about seeing some USB devices. TrueImage
version 7 or higher should see most/all USB devices, if you connect them
BEFORE booting from the recovery CD.

Presuming you have no intentions of updating the image regularly (if what
you really want is a long term preservation of the existing partition), AND
you have a recordable CD or DVD drive, then download BootIt New Generation,
(aka BootIt NG, aka BING) from
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-next-generation.htm

1. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to a new folder.
2. In that folder, run bootitng.exe to create a floppy installation disk,
3. Boot to the floppy disk, wait for it to load, then click Cancel when
prompted to install.
4. Click on Partition Work, click on CDz at left, then check to see that the
writable CD drive is listed.
5. Click back on HD 0 (assuming that's where your Win98 partition is) then
on the partition that is your Win98 installation, then click on Image at
right.
6. Go to CDz on left and then highlight the CD or DVD writer, then click
Paste. If you need more than one disc, you will be guided through that
process.

This can be done using the "clone" parameters of XXCopy
from www.xxcopy.com, which is documented in great detail
(e.g. command lines for a first complete clone copy, and
then later updates that copy only changed or new files.)

Brute force recoveries can be made from an XXCopy clone.
I use for this purpose PowerDesk because its copy function
is less restricted than Windows's copy function.

Fishy? Holy Mackeral, there Andy. Ghost was part of a Norton 2 app
deal, and TrueImage was a Free offering. I've never used either
because my Win98 machine did not have any kind of media burner (except
a 3.5" floppy) and the small HDD, partitioned C:\ & D:\ , didn't have
any room for backups. When I got SE installed with USB 2.0, I got the
Flash drive operating and now have a medium to Backup, Image, Clone or
Ghost the system. My question really was, 'which one should I get
educated on and start using?' As the posts to this thread
demonstrate, there are a variety of confusing opinions and options in
this area. I'm just trying to sort out backups, versus images, versus
clones, and the best way to get the one I need.

As always, I appreciate the input of all who responded, and will take
a little from each to get the job done. Thanks especially to Ron
whose guidance put me on the right track to recover from being
blindsided by BitDefender and finally getting SE stable. Now I want
to be able to quickly recover from anything.

You don't clone something unless you expect to be able to boot from that
cloned storage device.

Most imaging softwares recognize NTFS within their own application for
storing images.

Most of the "newer" imaging and cloning softwares recognize USB/Firewire and
such attached storage devices. That is, when booting from said imaging or
cloning software boot media.
