START MENU ON WINDOWS 98

B

BILL

I have Windows 98. Went away for a week and came back to find none of my
PROGRAMS are listed on my START MENU when I click PROGRAMS. My FAVORITES are
gone also. How do I get them back onto my START MENU?

My DDESKTOP icon has also disappeared from my tool bar next to the START
button. How can I get it back there?

Though that *might* be something that could be fixed by restoring
a previous registry, I'd first find out who was fooling with your
computer when you were out of town and exactly waht the did!

Do they show in C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu and C:\WINDOWS\Favorites when you
browse there with Windows Explorer? If not, someone has deleted the
shortcuts in which case they *may* be in the recycle bin.

Don't recall but you don't really need it - Winkey + D does the same thing.

Since you haven't used it for a week, go into DOS (choose SafeMode Command
Prompt Only) and type scanreg/restore and press Enter. This should bring up
the last 5 registries with their dates. Now you should be able to see if
there is a date between when you last used it a week ago and when you tried
it when you got back. If there is some dates in between, then you know that
someone else used it while you were gone.
If you find a Registry with the date from a week ago, when you last used it,
you can try a Registry Restore to that one.
Here is MS procedure to accomplish this:

Restore them from the recycle bin as dadiOH eludes to? Those
shortcuts and folders are simply put in place with Windows Explorer
and the like, so in order for them to be gone, someone deleted them?
If you don't have them in your recycle bin they are GONE. Registry
restore will NOT get them back. Only other alternative I can think of
is that you did not log in as the user you normally do?

On Windows installation, that file is renamed from DESKTOP.SCF to Show
Desktop.scf and placed in your System folder as well as your C:\WINDOWS
\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch folder from
where you can see it next to your Start button. So grab a copy from
your system folder and place it back into the Quick Launch folder.
The order of the files showing in the quick launch bar are click and
dragable if I can make up a word. The bar itself can be moved around
as well.

The .scf file extension is hardwired to NOT show in Windows Explorer,
the result of this is that the file only shows as Show Desktop and not
as Show Desktop.scf. And then there is this:

I agree with philo that an investigation is called for. To test dadiOH's
idea, look in the Recycle Bin. To test Buffalo's idea without yet
booting to DOS...

(1) "START button, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"
(2) CD C:\Windows\Sysbckup
(3) DIR RB???.cab /od
(4) Use the "Mark" button, outline text with mouse, "Copy" & post for
inspection.

Here was mine on 09-22-05...

C:\>CD C:\Windows\Sysbckup
C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP>dir rb???.cab /od /a
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP
RBBAD CAB 1,593,319 09-08-05 5:22p rbbad.cab
RB001 CAB 1,590,251 09-18-05 3:34p rb001.cab
RB002 CAB 1,589,811 09-19-05 9:15a rb002.cab
RB003 CAB 1,583,534 09-20-05 8:53a rb003.cab
RB004 CAB 1,583,487 09-21-05 10:01a rb004.cab
RB005 CAB 1,583,477 09-22-05 11:54a rb005.cab
6 file(s) 9,523,879 bytes

Note, on 9/8 I did a Scanreg /Fix, which created the RBbad. It is also
created when Windows decides on it's own to replace a Registry with one
of the backups. Then, the Registry that was replaced ends up in RBbad.
When Windows detects a Registry corruption at boot, it will look for one
of those backups to replace it with. If there only is a very old one in
there, it would explain a loss of recent changes to settings at reboot.

One RB*.cab is created at the first successful boot per day, when all is
well. So, check those dates. If you have one for a day you didn't turn
on the machine-- someone else turned it on & did something!

To test Lee's idea about whether you have multiple users & boot to the
wrong one (which could have the differences you report)...

(1) Click the START menu.
How many Log Off's are there?

(2) "START, Find, F/F, "Start Menu"
Ensure you use those quotes.
How many show up? I get only two...

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu, &
C:\WINDOWS\All Users

If you have more than two, you've possibly logged onto the wrong one.
