NVidia Graphic driver

D

denmarfl

Running Vista Home Prem 32bit with Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB Graphic Card.
Factory installed driver ver 167.37. When I try to upgrade to a newer NVidia
driver (tried 174.74 and 175.19) following the Upgrade my PC Shutsdown
abnormally. It flips from the desktop to a Vista screen that reads PLEASE
WAIT, back to the desktop, then to a Vista Screen that reads Shutting down.
I know this is caused by updating the driver because if I delete the upgraded
Nvidia Driver and let Windows assign the driver my Shutdown is fine. It
seems all is fine if I use the factory installed 167.37 driver, or, the
Windows driver.

Anyone else with the same card experiencing this problem after updating? I
have worked with the Manufacturers and NVidia Tech agents and so far neither
have been able to determine the cause. After 1 of the upgrades I actually
had to use the Factory restore Image to get my PC to shutdown properly.

Does your motherboard have, by chance, a VIA chip set?
If not, have you checked for an updated BIOS?

Hi "denmarfl"

I am facing different but equally frustrating NVIDIA driver problems.
Vista Home Premium, 2Gb, Dual Intel 4300 1.8Ghz, 1000+ GB, 8400GS Graphics Card OEM installed
driver 162.13

MS update for new driver 175.19 either does not get installed or, using some tricks such as
disabling my D:\ Recovery Partition to prvent the computer 'finding' the 'old' driver repeatedly,
gets installed & upgraded but computer not working anymore, black screens. Used system restore to
get back to work.

NVIDIA support advised different drivers, a driver sweeper and instructions: same probs over and
over.

Then NVIDIA support reported they were at a loss to fix this and advised me - the enduser! - to
contact MS for this problem.
I told them to escalate this problem internally rather than have an enduser going round in circles,
which they did, reporting they have sent the case to their Level 2 technicians, "which could take
some time".

Waiting for their results meanwhile reverted to the 'old' OEM installed driver.

You may want to use this escalation route as well.

The best way to update NVidia drivers.

Download the new driver from NVidia site - the auto select tool works
usually.

Go to add remove and uninstall old drivers... this may mess up the
screen layout a bit. Turn off security software like AV and anti
spyware, these can prevent registry changes that are necessary.

Reboot, you MUST do this.

Now install the new drivers before doing anything else.

When done reboot, restart other stuff you had disabled.

If this does not work then you will have to see what NVidia can do to
help, but failing to uninstall and then reboot can and does cause
trouble sometimes.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your kind suggestions.
FYI below here's how NVIDIA really want you to do it.
Meanwhile, their latest driver is 175.19.
Trust me, I did this 20 times to no avail.
The combined problem with the new driver, the graphics card and Vista is now being escalated
internally at NVIDIA.
If you Google for [NVIDIA driver Vista problem] you will be amazed.
But then again, no one of course nobody will ever post a successful upgrade -))

-------------------------------------------------------
From NVIDIA Support desk:

Dear Maria
Thank you for updating with the requested information.

According to your system configuration, you have:

1. Graphic card: GeForce 8400 GS
2. Driver version: 162.13 (7.15.11.6213)
3. Operating system: Windows Vista 32-bit

With all the above details, please follow the below steps to install the latest and certified driver
version 169.25:

1. Restart the computer.
2. While the computer is restarting simultaneously, keep tapping the function key “F8†on the
keyboard.
3. Now, you will need to select “Safe mode with Networking.â€

NOTE: Steps to enter into safe mode may differ for different manufacturers, kindly check with your
computer manufacturer to enter accordingly.

Once you are into Safe mode, kindly install the graphics driver by following the steps given below:

1) To avoid download issues, if you are running any 3rd party download utilities, please disable
them as they are known for occasionally causing errors with the downloads.

2) Please, download and save the graphic card driver on the desktop by visiting the page at the
following link and clicking the Primary Download Site under US English.

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/169.25/169.25_forceware_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe

OR

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/175.12/175.12_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_beta.exe

3) Uninstall the existing driver by uninstalling the NVIDIA Display Drivers from Add/Remove programs
and restart the computer. Please click the link below for the steps to uninstall the graphics
driver.

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10

4) Please, uninstall the existing driver using a driver cleaner. Please click the link below to
download a driver cleaner, which is a free utility.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655 (You may follow steps from my previous email to
use the driver cleaner tool)

5) Install the driver by double clicking on the saved driver icon on the desktop and follow the
instructions. After installing, restart the computer.

Please let me know if the above recommendation helps.

Best Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care

Well, sorry to hear that but yes, they are more correct than my brief
description. I have never found it necessary to use safe mode, but have
found the key is usually to start with a clean system just after reboot.

There is not really anything wrong with the drivers offered by MS or
Windows update, the problem is that this is not a "Clean" way to do it
because the old drivers are still in use and other things are going on
that may conflict.

By the way the latest drivers are not necessarily the best, if what you
have works properly stick with it, at least until you get a resolution
from NVidia or they bring out another update.

I actually worked with a Nvidia tech and they walked me thru an install.
They had me use the driveSweeper tool, they had me doing this in Safe Mode.
We uninstalled the old driver, rebooted, installed the New driver and the
results were no different than when I did nothing...that is, I just clicked
the Optional offered Microsoft Update for the Nvidia GeForce 8800GT.....the
175.19 driver installed, but following that install my PC, again, as in past
attemots, shutdown abnormally (Flipping from Desktop to PLEASE WAIT window ,
back to Desktop...then to the Shutting Down Window). I was hoping to hear
from someone that experienced this exact abnormal shutdown after updating the
driver). The NVidia high level tech I worked with also said the problem would
be passed to the Engineers and felt NVidia may have broken a Registry Code in
the newer drivers Design.

I was if a Fix was needed it could be many months
away.

Well, going back several years I have found that if my method failed you
just stay with an older driver that does work and wait it out.

Always keep a copy of the current driver and / or at the very least make
sure you can locate something older on the website, just in case.

175.19 is also a Vista driver - I have it on my machine - works fine.

Well, it's not listed as being Vista-compatible on any official sites
that I checked (Nvidia or the maker of my video card). I'd download
it and try it if I thought it wouldn't screw everything up here.

My card isn't supported (FX5200)... maybe that's why I couldn't find
it.

Could be -)

It is on the NVidia site for both XP and Vista

Advised by NVIDIA staff today I successfully installed their driver 177.83 for the 8 series.
You will find it here:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/forcewithin/us/download.asp
It is huge: 109 MB... (why? what does it do different than the old 50MB?)
Download it to your desktop.
Now FIRST create a System Rrecovery Point, providing upto now your machine runs fine.
Or remember to which earlier poit you may want to revert in case of trouble.
In normal mode uninstall your current driver from the NVIDIA software list.
Your screen will go funny.
Reboot into safe mode, preferably incluidng networking so you can Google and stuff.
Use a Guru3.com Driver Sweeper. Clean both Reg and prog files for the NVIDIA display drivers.
Verify the result in the Sweeper's Log.
If you have a Recovery Partition containing the "old"driver stuff disable all .INF and .DAT files by
just adding .OFF to the extension.
Vista will protest but just make it look like *.INF.OFF and *.DAT.OFF, so the OS cannot get mixed up
finding older drivers.
Then run the Install Wizard which might take a long time, like 12 minutes and its Progress BAr not
moving at all...
Sometimes it says it's done and it's not.
Just retry. Sometimes it says "not installed" but it is... weird. Try your luck.
Reboot into full mode and, when everything seems to be running, go to device manager > display
adapter > properties and see if the adapter really runs from something called 7.15.11.7783.
As it happens MS offered an automatic update today BUT - you cannot see what version it is. Don't
install - UNTICK.
Always set your MS Automatic Update to Manual Install, never AUT so you have control.
Good luck,
let me know how you fare.

The Update offered by Windows is 175.19.

I have worked with a Nvidia tech Agent to try to install on updated Nvidia
driver (OS Vista Home Prem 32Bit GeForce 8800GT 512mb). We used the method
you outlined....the Install caused an Abnormal Shutdown of my PC. When you
clicked ReStart or Shutdown the screen would flip from the Desktop to a Vista
Screen that read PLEASE WAIT, back to the desktop, then to another Vista
Screen that read SHUTTING Down. After restoring back to the prior Nvidia
Driver (167.36) and my PC shutting down properly.....Desktop to Shutting Down
Screen, I then simply tried installing a newer NVidia Driver but this time I
did not go thru all the steps....in fact, the DriverSweeper tool wouldn't
install when I was working with Nvidia. So I simply Uninstalled the old
driver (Device Mgr) and installed the newer Version. When I did this I ended
up with the same bad result, my PC again began to shutdown abnormally as
decribed above.

My point, at least for me, it did not matter if I used the safe Mode
process, The Driversweeper Cleaner or just Uninstall and Install in Normal
mode...the results were the same.

NVidia did say that it could be the driver "broke a registry Code", their
words. Further, they have informed me that they released a New driver 177.83
which has many Fixes....but there are no Relese notes available as yet.
