WM-Player streaming audio.

Hi Everyone,
I MAY also have a newsgroup problem using OE-- I sent a post to
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web and it never did post??

I'm a old timer, not new to this group--
My question IS regarding WM-Player and I see some othes have posted here
regarding the player.

Hi everyone,
Maybe a MVP can answer or anyone can chime in w/knowledge. I'm experience
strange behavior of WMP on a website I've been going to for years. I am
giving a page location on this sight.

The files are streaming audia-- MPEG Audio Layer-3
The pages have the WMP control on them.

I know this isn't a problem w/my player, I suspect it's security related. I
have added SP-3 to my W-XP OS recently since visiting the page. This
occurs only on this website which is quite large. Actually I have NEVER seen
anything quite like this before, the player works absolutely first rate
playing audio & video on other websites.

* open website, music starts & plays 80% of song-- STOPS, dialog box opens--
Error-- Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error
occurred.

* If I paste the sound location into IE address bar-- WMPlayer opens for me
and again plays 80% of the 4:04 min. sound file.

** I receive same dialog box--. Windows Media Player cannot play the file
because a network error occurred.

I Click on more info button--
0xC00D11C0: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network problem
occurred.

1. Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or
Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.

2. The path to the file is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) address in the Open URL dialog box, ensure that the file name
is spelled correctly and the path to the file is correct, and then try
again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link may not be valid.

3. The server is down or busy. Try connecting to the server again later.
Some network protocols in the Player are not enabled. Enable all network
protocols, and then try again.

4. The proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly.
Verify that your proxy settings are correct, and then try again.

I'm positive Microsoft IS missing MY REASON/OCCURENCE ??

You will not get expert WinXP advice in a NG specializing
in the Win98 OS. Any adviser will probably need to know
your WMP version, OE version, Java settings etc.

I have XP SP3 installed and your song runs the full length. This is an XP
problem. You need XP SP3 assistance, specifically. And you can get it for
free from Microsoft at the following contacts:

My understanding is that they work their butts off and really are
interested. I can't say, since I've only run into one issue with SP3 and
there is apparently no remedy. Actually, it's more like intentional.

The most appropriate newsgroup in which to post your query is:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Don't expect a quick answer from the NG, or any at all except more or less
what I gave you above. But *maybe* somebody happens to have noted this
specific issue, also, and you can compare notes.

As for your missing post (it's not on Google, yet), if you posted it
directly to the MS News Server then you should know that nobody is really in
charge over there and that there are the strangest filters that have been
put in place, ad hoc, all over their news servers, such that the most
innocuous words trip a delete. Only remedy is to essentially re-write the
thing like an English assignment in creative plagiarism.

If you posted it to some other news server, then I have no advice to offer.

Hi Glen,
Thxs for the link to the Tech Guy-- I read the post you linked me to-- the
poster couldn't stream video at all. I will post in the multimedia forum,
who knows, I surely can't be the only one with this occurence!!

Do you have XP now or just 98-SE, I seem to remember you were running both
OS's?? I'm happy to see your still in this group.

Very strange symptom, the song plays 80% and then just stops and gives the
error I posted. Hopefully I will figure it out, but it seems like WHAT's to
figure--- when the problem for me is only one large website, but I sure did
enjoy going and spending time.

Hi Gary,
Ummm-- you have SP-3 on your XP system and you could play the entire song.
Your a MVP and have more knowledge than me. Thanks for the link to help, I
have had SP-3 for sometime now. My install went very well, and I didn't
notice anything at all, nada. I was so pleased to have NO issues. Do you
know, or have you heard of a similar occurence like mine happening after
SP-3?

Yes, I brought the XP-Gen NG into OE. The NG I picked from the list for my
first post was... *microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web*
and I subscribed to it. My post NEVER posted, in fact nothing has posted
since 8/21/08 into that group-- another strange occurence that I've never
encountered. I have 2 accounts for NG's... one for Microsoft & one for my
ISP.

Can't say as I have heard of this, but I've run into my own issues that were
at first unknown and then became common knowledge. Upon reflection, have you
emptied Temporary Internet Files? Reinstalled WMP?

Anyway, take it to tech support.

Despite the differing symptoms, it is still worth trying some of the suggestions
there.

Your error after playing 80% could be as simple as a losing the connection to the
streaming server due to connection problems via your ISP.

Yes, I dual boot 98SE and XP, plus I have other computers with other operating
systems installed, including Windows Home Server (WHS).

Please let us know if you get this resolved, and if you get any info through the
support channels for XP SP3.

Please note that when I looked through the WMP mini-faq at
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html, there was this info which may relate to your issue:

I'm getting that same error (& none of the song plays-- not even 80%)...

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network problem
occurred. You may encounter this error message for one of the following
reasons:

I tried all suggestions & none have worked...

(a) All protocols were already enabled at the WMP, Options, Network tab.
(b) I unchecked the UDP protocol there.

(e) I disabled Kerio Personal Firewall at the Administration screen.

I'd like to think the site itself is doing something wrong-- but Terhune
says it works for him! Of course he's using XP & I'm still Win98. Should
it work for Win98SE with WMP v.9 too?

My 98SE machine is freshly installed with what I consider a basic build
including Avast!, Flash, Java, QT and Real players, WMP 9, DX9.0c -- the
full boat that I might deliver to a client (mentioning only that stuff which
might be involved, here), and while I don't actually have any speakers
plugged in (gotta go out to the shed and dig up a pair for this Compaq test
bed), I loaded that page over and over again and got no errors or other
prompts (once I'd installed the sound card drivers, which I usually don't
bother with, for the obvious reason that it has no speakers.)

Thanks for your interest, Terhune. I'm SE & fully updated, even Flash is
updated. But I never went for SUN Java, & I don't have QT or Real
Player. I am Dial-Up at 52,000 bps.

Suddenly, the site works for me, even with avast!'s proxy & Kerio
Personal Firewall enabled. The tune that site plays is...

I dropped that URL into an address bar (as Star tried). It caused a
full-screen WMP to open with the error still. However, the ditty was
loaded, &, when I clicked the play button-- it played all the way
through! I went back to the site-- & that seems to be working too now,
although the error did at first show up once/twice more. I guess I'm
more/less fully cured! Thanks again & to glee too.

I guess it's playing from TIFs now, &, if I wipe them, I'll have to go
through the rigmarole all over again.

Took to NG microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player...
Gary can play on a newly installed 98-SE OS, and his XP system w/SP-3.
PCR could NOT on 98-SE, got some of the same errors at me. But now he's
fixed, can play entire song, this IS absolutely crazy!!

I've still been checking it out and a media MVP has given more feedback.
Confirmed, these arn't .WAV files but MP3, which I originally discovered. I
saw the stats in the properties on the pages & in WMplayer when I called it
up w/direct link pasting in my browser.

Neil couldn't play the songs at all, WMplayer barfed on him without a gag.

Very strange, I can tell you the songs USE to play entirely for me and not
abruptly stop w/13 seconds left to play.

And here's where I step out of the discussion, because whatever the issue
is, I'm pretty certain it isn't in any of the Windows systems that have
participated thus far, or any other PCs. The issue must be in the
construction of the site, the coding of the player, and/or a problem in the
sound file. Not something my brain is up to following.

That site does appear to be a bit nutty. It took several tries to get
the .wav to work too. Delete them from TIFs & try again. When finally it
works, you should have a TIF that looks like...

G:\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\D3RF5DGE>dir *.wav
Directory of G:\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\D3RF5DGE
ANGELS~1 WAV 540,498 09-04-08 9:36p AngelsInWaiting[1].wav

That will be run for 3:36 without an error. Copy it to your music
folder-- & forget about the site!

Don't you have Windows 98-SE installed on your C:\Directory??
I seem to remember your puter only had one drive and it WAS NOT
partitioned??
Like Windows 98-SE, XP has Content IE5 fldr INSIDE the TIF.
I'm unable to view the inside the Content IE5 fldr, don't know how on XP.
I do know on 98-SE it can be viewed using Windows Explorer, that IS NOT true
for W-XP.
In XP the default path to the TIF IS....
C:\Documents and Settings\Star\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Also, when I play the Angels In Waiting or any media on the Internet, the
media files don't go into Content IE5 but just inside the TIF (all video &
audio, flash, etc...) I can grap from the TIF and do not grab from Content
IE5.

No problem, this is one issue and one website to *let go*... I will miss it,
maybe it will fix itself in the future and I again can play the complete
songs.

Can you tell me how to viwe the Content IE5 inside my TIF??
I know how on W-98-SE, use Windows Explorer to browse, but this doesn't work
on XP for me??
Could you help me out w/this question.

start - run - cleanmgr
select Temporary Internet Files.
then click the "View Files' button.
Read the location if disired - or just browse.

Hi,
Wow, I tried to figure this out some time back, I knew how on other OS's,
kinda felt pissed that I couldn't see the Content IE5 via explore and using
Windows Explorer!!

Thank you so much, forgot about this issue until PCR reminded me!!

OMG, how simple, is this the only way via Clean Mgr., never would have
discovered on my own ! ?
