SSL Alert

I'm getting a SSL Alert saying " The browser and web-site cannot communicate
securely because there are no common encryption algorithms. " I'm trying to
get on a stock trading web-site to do stock tradings. I've always used my
Desktop PC, a Dell Dimension 8300 running Windows XP Pro Edition or my Dell
Inspiron 9400 laptop running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I have no
problems using those operating systems. This is the first time I've tried to
use my DIY, well it used to be a Dell, but pieced together and now running
great for a Windows 98 SE.
It says I need to " Check the SSL protocol settings on the browser for
SSLv3/TLSv1 protocol support. " " The secure web-site may be using
high-strenght encryption algorithms (128 bit). Check the SSL settings on
your browser, if it supports high-strenght encryption algorithms. " " Upgrade
your browser to the latest version. " Ok, upgrade my browser to the latest
version. How do I do that. Where do I go to access and upgrade that data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, attilathehun1
PS I've built a number of PCs and troubleshooted many more. So I'm PC
enabled to a degree. LOL

And the secret web browser your using is?

If IE: Tools > Options > Advanced tab.
Scroll down and make sure "Use SSL 2.0 and 3.0" are checked (selected).

You could try Help Online Support in your browser. The latest version
that will run on Win98SE is 6 with updates. It includes SSL 3 under
Tools Internet Options Advanced.

Good luck

Ok, I went to Internet Options, Advanced Tab, scrolled down and checked the
boxes to enable SSLv3/TSLv1. I'm still getting the message that the web-site
may be using high-strenght encryption algorithms (128). Check the settings
on your browser, if it supports high-strenght encryption algorithms. Then
finally, upgrade your browser to the latest version.
I went to Windows Update and it said there is no more support for Windows
98 and Windows ME effective July, 11, 2006. When I click to scan for updates
it give me an error message. Now this has happened maybe 10 times or more
that I've tried to scan for updates. I don't know where to go to update my
browser to the latest version. I figure that must be the answer to this
problem. I'm not sure what to do now though.
Thanks, attilathehun1

Dan

For Windows 98 or 98SE the easiest way I have found to update is by using the
Windows Security cd. I am not sure if Microsoft has any more copies left
since 98, 98SE and ME have been discountinued but if Microsoft does not have
any you could borrow one from a friend. The main thing that it sounds like
you need is Internet Explorer 6 which is available as a download from
Microsoft. Here is the link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en

Hopefully, the download and install of IE 6 will set you right. If not then
be sure to check your clock for the proper time setting as well as clearing
the temporary Internet files including off-line files. I would also clear
your Internet History and all of your cookies from Internet Explorer. Please
let us know if any of these suggestions helped. Thank you for your time and
have a great day!

( Don't know if updating the 'Windows Root Certificates' will help,
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe>,

if you haven't done it already. Others may weigh in on whether the current
download, version 13, is still even advisable to install on Win98xE or not.)

Anyways, if you can't get Web-browser X to work, it's a good thing
alternatives Y and Z exist, don't you think?

*Opera* : <http://www.opera.com/download/>
<http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/>:
"Opera supports Secure Socket Layer (SSL) version 3, and TLS 1.0 and 1.1.
Opera supports 256-bit encryption, the strongest standard encryption for the
Web."

*Firefox* : <http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/>
also does Encryption - SSL, TLS and Certificates.
<http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options#advanced> at the bottom.

And both these Web-browsers are still updated for both Win98FE and Win98SE.

YIKES-- not root certificates again! I'm back to...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{EF289A85-8E57-408d-BE47-73B55609861A}]
@="RootsUpdate"
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001
"Version"="6,0,2195,0"
"Locale"="*"
"ComponentID"="Windows Roots Update"

.... after fishing them out of a Registry on D:partition-- & I have no
problem with encryption! I had to EXPORT that entire Registry to do it!

I think probably Dan has it right... update to IE6 SP1 probably does it.
I see no specific critical update offering 128 bit encryption at the
Catalog...
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
....but, I guess, take the latest IE Cumulative Update too. It might be
in that!

OR... if one doesn't want to go to IE6... maybe go to the Corporate
site...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp
...., but I can't quite find it there, either.
