Registry been changed, now error message, and cannot access regist

Hi!

My Windows ME machine suddenly began posting this error message "Your
current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page".
The computer will not boot up all the way, and I cannot use the Start button
or access files. I googled the error message, and found a fix involving
changing the registry key. To get to the registry, I opened the computer in
Safe Mode, went to the MS-DOS prompt, and ran REGEDIT. Everything opened up
fine, but I cannot open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER line in the registry - it gives
me an error message.

So my question is, does anyone know another way for me to get into and
edit my registry? And if you happen to know an alternate way to fix the
"ActiveX" message that I am getting, please let me know.

Before trying to edit the registry thoroughly check your system for
unwanted malware, especially so since you say you are unable to use
regedit since disabling regedit is often a side effect of a malware
problem since the malware involved doesn't want you removing it.

Before proceeding further however you might want to try booting to safe
mode and running system restore and roll your system back to a checkpoint
created before the problem started.

When you get everything back to normal, go to "Tools", "Internet Options",
"Security, "Custom" and decide which ActiveX options you really prefer. It
also sounds like you need some 3rd party security on your unit.

Mike,

Thanks so much for your response. I only have limited functionality
with the programs, so I'm not sure if I will be able to run a scan for
malware or hot.

Also, normally I would do system restore by going through the Start
button, but the Start button is nonfunctional. DOS commands work, or I can
go into the Windows folder - is there some other way of using system restore
other than using the Start button?

You can try launching the file rstrui.exe which is located in
C:\Windows\system32\restore. Alternatively can you boot to Safe Mode? If
so, do you have the same problems accessing the Start button, etc?

Please let us know how you get on. Remember to roll back to a checkpoint
created before the problem began which might not necessarily be the most
recent.

Ok, last night I was able to use Trend Micro to do a scan, but it wasn't
able to find anything.

I can boot up in safe mode, but I still cannot use the start button. I
will try the rstrui.exe file tonight - thanks so much. I'll keep you apprised.

Mike,

Success! I had an old emergency boot-up floppy that I used. Once I
did the limited bootup, it gave me some choices for troubleshooting,
including a registry checker. I ran the registry checker, it fixed the
problem, and the computer is working great now!
