The issue of Spam in 98 General

I noticed how a lot of are spam recently seems to be coming from the Windows
98 banter newsgroup. I wonder why that is and does anyone know why it is
particularly just mainly from this newsgroup recently?

Number and type of recent spam in this NG seems much the
same as in other MS public NGs e.g. for WinXP.

You mean the "Windows 98 Banter" server.

The spam you see here (or don't see here) is a function of how well the
server you are using can filter it.

I see very little of the spam you people are talking about, because the
AIOE server is running software that is looking for and killing the
spam.

The only time I see spam is when someone else replies to it to make some
inane comment or warning to the sender.

Upon more examination, it seems that win98banter allows people to post
to usenet (perhaps only to certain microsoft.* groups) and it does it
via Microsoft's own servers.

In all such cases, you will see the machine "mrstrans" in the path. The
machine's full name is msrtrans.research.microsoft.com (131.107.151.145
- which apparently has no rDNS).

This page:
http://www.securityoffice.net/mssecrets/data/131-107-65.html

identifies mrstrans as a general purpose server (ftp, SMTP, NNTP, etc).

The administrators of the Microsoft usenet servers should be made aware
of the abuse of their mrstrans machine by those accessing it from the
win98banter.com web interface.
