Extracting photos from .AVI videos (win98)

My digital camera makes short one minute .AVI videos. I often record
the full minute, then hit the button to get another minute. I'd like
to find software to paste the two pieces together, and maybe edit out
some frames. In the least, I'd like to make still photos from
individual frames. Does anyone know of any software I can download to
do any of this? Must be for Win98. Freeware preferred if possible,
excessively bloated software not needed, just something simple.

Thanks for all advice

So, if it isn't old, isn't free and it isn't very light weight, forget
about it? Well, not to be helpful or anything (but, indeed, to be
provocative), but here's a list to start with:

Skip the middle one, and you are pretty close.

How is it easy? Please explain.

Gary was added to my killfile long ago. I dont care to read his rude
posts on this or any newsgroup. But I can see his useless
recommendation in this followup.

I was asking for program recommendations, not how to use Google. If I
wanted to use google, and install/remove a pile of junkware, I could
do that without his advice. There are tons of program downloads
online, most are demos, many are junk, some contain spyware. I dont
use my computer to test junk, which can be dangerous.

This is why I asked for advice of a safe and useful program, which
others use, enjoy, and recommend. I stated what I am looking for to
eliminate things that wont work, such as XP software.

Ooops!

I do apologise, Letterman. I didn't appreciate that you wanted someone else to do all the work for
you.

Maybe yoy should read through the thread I started earlier today entitled 'Ping: Dan The Core Rules
of Netiquette'

Good luck in your quest!

Sorry, but I dont think asking for a recommendation is asking anyone
to do any work for me. I'm sure other people have used this type of
software, and they know what they like and dislike.

I'm sure you are right about that second sentence.
I wonder if any are here on this group and, if they are, whether they will tell you!

If *I* had wanted to make progress, I'd have explored some of the 278,000 leads that Gary kindly
provided and then, perhaps, come back here for advice before actually downloading specific software
onto my PC.

Might still be worth a try! <wink>

How about AVIedit?

Thanks Franc

I just gave AVIedit a try. It looks like something I was looking for,
except for some reason, it will only show the first frame in my camera
videos. When I click on the PLAY arrow, it will not play them. Any
idea why?

These are just standard .AVI movies from a Canon digital camera.

Well, I'm pretty certain that it doesn't do video splicing, but
IrfanView can certainly extract any or all frames from several formats
of video files (and save them as jpg, bmp, or a variety of others).
