Malicious Software Tool - is it worth it?

Richard Fangnail

I've never downloaded or used the Windows Malicious Software Removal
Tool. I download the patches every time and I use AVP antivirus and
Spybot (I use XP SP2). Should I bother with the Removal Tool?

Yes, I would recommend that you allow its use.
There is a very large amount of research behind the monthly
MRT releases that takes into account what is being seen in
the wild. The MRT also addresses some things your standard
AV may not. It is a one-time execution and does not interfere
with your existing anti-malware.

Is there a trick to running it once you've downloaded it?

Double-click

If you get it via Windows Update it runs during patch install.
If you manually run it then you get options as to how extensive
the examination will be.

Note that a new version (August release) of MRT is due tomorrow.

Double click on what?

I will probably run it during Update but you should specify that here.

Not one company in the world can say they can remove a virus or a malware in
one stance, put it this way Malicious software removal tool is an option for
such matter. It targets specific and known infection it is not a replacement
for anti-virus software but one thing to all infection listed on its to
remove one will be removed.

More about its capability ( things that it can remove )

If you have not installed it yet...

You can download the latest manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

Save it where ever you want - double-click on the exe
(Windows-KB890830-Vx.xx.exe) to install/run it the first time.
(The initial location will be *where ever you saved it*.)

After that - using the information gleamed last - you can click on the
"Start" button, go to RUN and type in:

%SystemRoot%\system32\mrt.exe

.... and click OK to run the version you have installed currently - manually
at any time.
