You're right, invalid page fault is correct, not internal page fault.
Nevertheless, I tried to procedure that I had already found in the Knowledge
Base but it didn't solve my problem.

Try this:
Delete the Hh.dat file from the Windows folder.
To do so, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type hh.dat, and then click Find Now.
Right-click the Hh.dat file, click Delete, and then click Yes.

If that does not help, extract Hhctrl.ocx from the .cab files on your Windows CD, or
from the .cab file location on your hard drive, to the Windows\System folder, using
the"Extract one file" option of System File Checker (SFC).

Using SFC to extract a file:
http://www.rickrogers.org/sfc.htm#1pp
http://www.rickrogers.org/sfc.htm#2pp

HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kbEN-US129605#5

If that does not help, try this:
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
2. Type *.chw in the Search For box. Make sure that you are searching in "My
Computer" and you click to select the Search Subdirectories check box.
3. Click Find Now.
4. Click Edit from the menu bar and click Select All.
5. Press the DELETE key on the keyboard. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to
move files to the Recycle Bin.
6. Close the window and open Help.
7. Click the Index tab. Windows Help rebuilds the index file and creates a new .chw
file.

If it help with the pagefaults that's good of course, but is it advisable to
go back to that old version if one have updated Win98 to the 'HTML Help'
that comes with the 'Internet Explorer 6' bundle?

HTML Help Update(KB896358) Security(ms05-026) for Win98:
(Latest i know of that contains an [HHCtrl.ocx] file)
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358/>

contains no link to DL it, so ..

Yes, the best thing would be to reinstall that update to replace the file.

Thanks for the link to the download itself. I could not find it when I posted.

Glad to hear it.

Now you should download and install the HTML Help Update as "...etal." mentioned in
his reply, to update that file and its associated files with the latest version:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...96358-ENU_c5723e17767d92f28912f0c368525bc.exe

I was going to recommend that but could not find a link to the file download that
worked, so I gave you the next best alternative of extracting. (Thanks again to
"...etal." for finding a working link to the download).
