Still have "Please do not power down or unplug your machine. installing update 1 of 5" on Windows 7

Will powering down, then powering up and hitting the F8 key allow me to select a restore point in Windows 7 prior to trying to install updates?

What is the procedure to accomplish a restart without the Installation problem?
