How can I make Outlook (that replaced Hotmail) my default email?

I was previously using MSN Premium and have decided to not renew my subscription and just use hotmail. However, my hotmail account has been converted to the new Outlook format. When I go to my default list to pick a program to be the default email I will

be using for quick access, neither Outlook or Hotmail appears on that list to choose from. How can I make the new Outlook my default email?

 

Normally, I first go to the START button, and then click "Default Programs." Then I click "Set Your Default Programs."

This "New" Outlook that replaced my Hotmail does not even show up on the list of programs in order that I can set it as the default email program.

I am running Windows Vista and using Internet Explorer 9 (which is constantly freezing up now!)
