KB2807986 Update Hangs Badly

First, the environment:

 

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and IE 9.0.8112.16421

Dell Latitude E6500 with Intel P8600, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia Quatro NVS160M

 

I have tried installing KB2807986 without success via Windows Update -- first as an automatic update, the second time as a "download and notify" update. In both cases, the computer will hang on the update's restart by freezing at the "Preparing to configure

Windows.Do not turn off your computer." screen indefinitely.

 

Both times, att this point I've needed to power off the machine, restart in Safe Mode, and delete the install via System Restore. I've run CHKDSK, of course, and found no errors. I've also unplugged all external devices. No luck.

 

Since this is a pretty serious Security Update, is there a workaround?
