Windows 2003 update.exe tapping out cpu

I'm trying to use Windows Update on a windows 2003 Standard server SP2. I am unable to install ANY Security update - even one at a time. Update.exe uses almost all of the CPU, while LSASS.EXE utilizes pretty much the remainder. I've tried the MS FIXIT

for this solution. It tells me it discovered and fixed &quotWindows Update Components&quot, but it still doesn't work. I run the FIXIT again, and it finds the same problem and tells me it is fixed, ad infinitum. All non-&quotSecurity&quot updates are installed successfully.
