I can no longer update defender nor can I download another version. What can I do?

My laptop pc crashed and I had another hard-drive installed with the programs from the old pc "cloned" to the new hard drive.I can open Defender but can not update it. I get an error code Oxc8000222 Also, Defender has dropped from my start up menu. Also Defender is no longer in the control panel. When I try to download another version I get the message the Defender is already imbedded

in Vista so I can't get another version. How do I get Defender back?
