ATI Driver Update Results in Black Screen

Hello. I believe this may be a known issue and I appologize if it's been

asked numerous times before. I've only been able to find a handful of

references and none of them seem to contain a solution.

Anyhow, I have an Acer Travelmate 2451 that has the ATI Xpress 200m chipset.

I recently upgraded my XP to Vista and had absolutely no issues with the

install or any other updates the system has done. However, when I try to use

the update feature to update my graphics drivers to the suggested Vista

driver set, (I believe it's dated 1/26/2007) it results in a black screen

that never clears. If I reset, I can go into safe mode perfectly fine, but

any attempt to boot normally results in the black screen after the start up

logo until I roll the drivers back. It wouldn't bother me so much, if it

weren't for the fact that I think it's also preventing me from being able to

play DVD's, as any attempt always results in an error telling me the

copyright protection doesn't like something and I should update my graphics

drivers. I know there was a hotfix and an official patch that was labeled as

addressing something similar, but neither have resolved the issue for me. I

have also attempted to use ModTool, which installs the most recent drivers,

but leaves me with the DVD issue.

Anyone know of a fix for this one? Thanks, in advance, for any feedback or

help.

Hi there,

If your hardware works fine: leave it be working fine and never take driver

updates from windows update unlees they are driver(s) for a microsoft

device, if not go to the manufacturers website that is IF an update is

NEEDED because the hardware is not working well.

If any problem arrised by taking a driver update from WU, try booting last

known good configuration, rolling back on the driver ore use system restore.

Best regards,

Michel Denie

I think I would start with rolling back to previous driver via Device

Manager.

If no joy, contact nVidia and post in their forum.

As RCM says, if it aint broke, don't fix.

Thanks for the responses guys. The only reason I updated, (or TRIED to update

:) ) beyond the initially installed driver was that copy protected DVD's

won't play and it tells me it's due to the graphics driver. I assumed it was

because it wanted the most updated "Microsoft Approved" version of the

driver. I can and have rolled back to the original driver, but I'm still in

the same place with a DVD player that can't be used.
