partition problems - reading insufficient

for the past couple months i have been getting an error code, telling me insufficient hard drive space. i look and dont see anything going on. my computer is getting slow and laggy now. tried updating drivers and a few other things. and even tried hitting a restore point i had saved on a flash to before this started. i am not getting a message every couple of minutes saying that my I drive is full. tired increasing its size but it is locked.. it should not be full, everything has been cleaned and defragged. when i click on the message, it wants me to dump files in the trash can and some shadow something. i cant remember what it is called..only 2 folders in there . i am thinking about doing a complete system purge, but i dont think that will fix the partition.
