Guest Excille Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Hello, I had been using file history with a detachable drive on my old computer using Win 10. When that computer failed completely, I used a different computer and found I could navigate through the data saved, but each of my files had a date/time group associated with it (for example, what should be "filename.doc" turned into "filename (2018_05_08 17_03_35 UTC).doc". Many of these files were duplicated with different date/time stamps, even though the file properties were exactly the same. Having over 300GB of data saved, I didn't relish the idea of sorting through all of my files, deleting the exact (but differently named) duplicates, and then re-naming all of the remaining files. After much online searching, a new Win 10 computer, and crossed fingers, I associated the same drive with the new computer, and tried to restore my files. The system first told me that "file history is off". So I turned it on, and was able to point it to my detachable drive, and lo and behold, all of my files seemed available. I selected the folders I wanted, and set it to restore overnight. I thought all was right with the world, until I noticed some empty folders had been restored to my desktop. Then I noticed many of my files didn't restore. When I went to preview them, I got the error "This version can't be previewed because it wasn't found in your file history". However, when I navigate through the drive directly, the files are viewable (but with the additional time stamp), and if they weren't in my file history, why are they showing up in the screen to restore my file history? On top of this, I looked in my other folders, and some of my files restored, while others didn't... at first I thought it was by file type, but then it seemed random. It seems as though the files with only the newer time-stamp didn't recover, while those which had multiple copies listed did, so I'm guessing there was some interruption while Windows was backing up the second time, even though the files were obviously saved. The solution I'm looking for is either 1)How do I convince Windows to restore all of the newer files I had backed up? or 2) How do I re-name every single file in my backup drive en masse to not have the (2018_05_08 17_03_35 UTC) addition so they're useful again? Thanks in advance. Continue reading... Quote
