Guest Vicky Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I have just had 5 updates - KB933729 - KB890830 - KB939653 - KB941202 - KB942571 and KB915597. After these have installed I then can not access internet explorer says "page can not be displayed." Did a system restore back to yesterday and everything ok. Got the message to download the updates again and the same thing happened. What on earth is going on because last week the update knocked out my Outlook which I can no longer use !!!!! -- Vicky

Guest sweetsirenaty Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Well the same thing happened to me. Guest Alan Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 The correct phrase is "I could NOT care less." And, I'm hoping the tortured spelling of your name, "sweetsirenaty," is only a bit of poetic license. Guest PA Bear Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Temporarily disable (1) Norton Anti-Virus and (2) all Norton Add-ons before installing any updates. If no joy... 1. Uninstall all Norton software via Add/Remove Programs. 2. Enable the Windows Firewall. 3. Run this removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or KAV7** 5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system scan. Do your problems persist now? [Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app before the free-trial period runs out!] * http://www.eset.com/download/index.php ** http://usa.kaspersky.com/trials/home-users/anti-virus-7/ -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ sweetsirenaty wrote: > Well the same thing happened to me. And no, I don't have any issue so far. Bye, Freudi
Guest werbung@thorstenbehling.de Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 The solution is sometimes easy... The update KB939653 IE7 under Vista installs new iexplore.exe and, yes, sometimes a virus scanner or an other security software doesn't allow writting a iexplore.exe to a directory. So, disable the security software and retry to install the KB939653 Patch. But, I think, the main reason why it will not work is that the UAC (User access control) will forbid the required actions and it doesn't ask for it as well. So, disable the UAC only for the first starting of the Internet Explorer. So, it can do things that only an administrator could do. Yes, you will say, then I can run it as administrator, but, by me, it doesn't work. The Internet Explorer will stuck and hang while starting. After the Disable actions and a restart, just start the Internet Explorer as usual, then activate the UAC again for security reasons. The switching of the UAC could be done easily by starting MSconfig, and then under TOOLS->Deactive user access control (or something like this). Another list selection says something like Activate user access control...Don't forget to restart after switching something. Greetings, MagicianWonder

Yup, while it "may" not be enough to "disable" Security Software via their context menues and options. > But, I think, the main reason why it will not work is that the UAC > (User access control) will forbid the required actions and it doesn't > ask for it as well. I don't think so, since the very same *may* happen on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 also - without any UAC implemented. False blocking 3rd party "Security Software" is in almost all cases i've seen so far the cause for the issues in question. Bye, Freu"http://patch-info.de/artikel/2007/10/09/414 - Bekannte Probleme"di

Disabling UAC, restart, starting internet explorer, Activate UAC, restart, and thats it. It works for that particular system at least. You are right with your general speakting, but in that case it works very well. bye
Guest themiller Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 The problem seems to be in the IE7 cumulative update KB939653 as I've tried this on 2 machines and the other updates had no effect but KB 939653 stopped the functionality whilst my antivirus still updated when prompted. I recommend that this update is not installed until MS sort it out. -- I''m a technophobe! Help!!! Hehe, *which* AV software are you using? Please provide the exact version number while reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818 in the meantime. > I recommend that this update is not installed until MS sort it out. That's a bad advice, if you ask me. Why? The security holes fixed with update are still open whithout the update beeing installed - and the underlying problem which causes the installation issue ("Security Soft- ware" blocking the new iexplore.exe wrongly) is still present too. Bye, Freudi

Guest Robbie Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hi This seems to be a major problem (KB939653) I've deleted it twice and now it doesn't seem to want to re-install, which is a relief. A problem that it has left behind is that some programmes that could connect to the internet now refuse to. An example being getting information for cd's for copying on to my mp3 player. Has anyone else had this problem. By the way I've included Windows Media Player in my Windows Firewall exceptions but to no effect "Ottmar Freudenberger" wrote: > "themiller" <themiller@discussions.microsoft.com> schrieb: > > > The problem seems to be in the IE7 cumulative update KB939653 > > Nope, on the "Security Software" running in the background while > installing KB939653 (and *any* other past and future IE7 update). > > > as I've tried > > this on 2 machines and the other updates had no effect but KB 939653 stopped > > the functionality whilst my antivirus still updated when prompted. > > Hehe, *which* AV software are you using? Someone singing the MSKB article above for you? -) KB939653 is a cumulative update for *IE*. And you *don't* need nor want to bore a hole for Windows Media Player into the Windows Firewall.
