Windows Update Service Crashes When check for new updates starts

I've tried all the posted methods, hotfix for BITS (doesn't apply to my

system), clearing the QMGR files from BITS, and Clearing the whole Software

Distribution directory from windows.

 

bitsadmin gives:

When WU service does crash, the start bar and menu goes nuts [back to

looking like WinXP] and only disabling the windows update service prevents

the problem.

Automatic updates are and have been enabled since install.

This should not be reappearing in the log:

Apparently the installation of the latest Version of the WUA is not

running to completion as the log indicates that it's being downloaded

over and over.

As to why ... could be interference from 3rd party software or just

plain brittleness on the part of Vista.

What I'm not seeing is the registering of the components, re: .dll files.

Not having Vista installed, I'd suggest locating

WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-TopLevel~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~7.0.6000.381

and deleting all instances found.

Then unregister and then delete these files:

 

regsvr32 /u wuapi.dll

 

wuapi.dll

wuaueng.dll

wucltux.dll

wudriver.dll

wups.dll

wups2.dll

wuwebv.dll

 

Then delete these files:

wuapp.exe

wuauclt.exe

 

Download the latest WUA from here:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

 

When the download completes close all browsers and open programs.

Stop the Windows Update service via the Services console or from

Start > Run > net stop wuauserv

 

Add /wuforce to WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and then choose 'Run as

administrator'

 

If that fails then you'll probably have to repair the OS from the DVD,

ensuring that all system files are reverted back to their original

state. Which would mean that all updates would then have to be reapplied

if Vista behaves as XP does. :(

You're welcome and also not alone in reinstalling Vista. It appears to
