Guest JR Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Hi, WinXP Home SP2 For this past week, with automatic download operating, or download and let me install, etc., the yellow shield would be in systray indicating I had a high priority download for install. When moving through the process, a popup would appear - with these words. "Setup Error. KB933729. Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update, .inf. Make sure the Cryptographic Service is running". I eventually turned off the 'auto updates' because this download would appear every few minutes. Cryptographic services are running, I've checked it many times. It's on autopilot and started. Any thoughts on this? Regards!

Guest JR Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Antioch, I'm working on this at the moment and when I find a solution, I will be back. I am also working on this at another post, Internet Explorer NewsGroup, because I can't install IE7, getting the same data about Crypto Svcs. Here are some examples but will go through all those sites you list, one by one, trying to find the solution. KB822798 - You cannot install some programs or updates. Method 4 of KB822798 is where my problem lies. Method 1 - Rename the Edb.log file. Using Start, Run, CMD, and typing - ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst Response: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. [For sure, I can't determine what that might be] Method 2 - Set Cryptographic Services to automatic. [When viewing Crypto services, it is set to started automatic, logged on Local System]. Method 3 - Rename the Catroot2 folder. 1. Start, Run, CMD. At the command prompt, type the following commands, net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2 net start cryptsvc exit Response: 'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. 2. Remove all tmp *.cat files from sys32 catroot... folder. No temps found. Method 4: Reregister DLL files associated with Crypto Svcs: regsvr32 /u softpub.dll regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll regsvr32 /u initpki.dll regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll [All DLLs succeeded in registering] 3. At command prompt, type above DLL's and ENTER. Response: 'regsvr32' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. So will keep chugging along here. Regards
Guest JR Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Hi, As I read the problem more closely, I don't believe I am having a Cryptographic Svc problem...the note merely wishes for me to check and see if C-S is running or started. The problem appears to be with the first part of the error message and that is "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update .inf". SFC /scannow gives a clean bill of health. What might be the ghost within, that checks the files out prior to installation or updating. Thanks!

Thanks! > This looks like a real pain in the axxe - I have it installed OK - how did the other Black Tuesday's, offered last week, download and install? Before spending hours searching, just give this a go - download from here but make sure you pick the one for XP SP2 - should be the first one in the list. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=7&freetext=kb933729&DisplayLang=en Save to disc or Desktop. Disconnect from the net - disable ALL security, AV/Antispy/Firewall. Then open and install. If all goes well, reboot even if not asked to and see if you still have a problem. Downloading this KB is causing some a prob - main advice has been to go to the actual site of the KB and download there - which is what I do every month and have done for over a year now. Good luck Antioch
Guest JR Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Antioch, I went to your listed site and downloaded the item - it was the first one. WinXP-KB933729-x86-ENU.exe. I tried it in safe mode too, but here, at end of seemingly installing, a popup states: "The system cannot find the file specified. File not installed". I will just 'deepsix' this and move on. My thanks!

I hope Mow, Ottmar and some of the other experts are looking into this one - I am confident they will do - perhaps explains why they have not come in yet - or they are all on holiday :-( I am wondering if it is to do with your version of WIN Installer? Stick it in the Hidden Folder in WU Home for now - avoids the yellow shield popping up all the time. By the way, do you not get any error number - is the warning exactly as you put in your first post, i.e. includes the KB No? I will see how you get on, anyway. Rgds Antioch

Guest JR Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 No sir, the Setup Error was the name of the popup. I can't remember now whether the KB number was shown or whether I added that for identification. For sure, the rest of it was there. Nope, at no time, at any of the problems indicated with IE7 or Windows Updates, has there ever been an error message (number) other than what I've posted. Now that I have that KB downloaded, when trying to install it, the process goes through and then a popup states: "if can't find the file". Install terminated... words to that affect. Take care!
Guest JR Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 antioch, Been there and done that...at least down through method 4. I have it posted here somewhere, either this one or another JR. Sorry bout that. I should have only posted once on here, at least until it was resolved. Thanks!

Please post the *last* ~50 lines of the "KB933729.log" file to be found in your Windows folder. Which applications are running in the background? Bye, Freudi
Guest JR Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Freudi, there is no KB933729 log file in windows because I have never been able to download it. I just scrolled through all the KB9's listed. I will note that on one occasion, "using the download but let me decide when to install" configuration, there were four updates shown and three installed successfully. Just this one would not install. As to what is running in the background, I'm sure that ZA was turned on, as well as AVG but not aware of anything else. The only items listed in Notification Area is sound, safely remove hardware, and Network Connection Monitor. Regards
Guest JR Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Freudi, Sorry about the 933729 log. I noted another post just above mine by SigBrat38 concerning the same problem. Guest JR Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Freudi, I note, looking at the log, there are 3 occasions when g:\ is used for the drive. Look, top downward, at 2.063 3.844 and 7.078. The G drive I have is an external WD drive. My OS is on the 40G internal drive C: drive, so why should the g: be listed a few times, with respect to trying to install this KB. I certainly had no control of what windows decided to do with this KB. I was only involved with clicking on the install button. Thanks!

Bye, Freudi
Guest JR Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Freudi, Reference your link to KB822798. I had already been through Method 4, having cmd problems. Method 5: Remove the hidden attribute from %windir% and from its subfolders. When I open CMD, it shows: C:\Documents and Settings\JR> and the cursor flashing. Each time I try to use it, I get this response - 'whatever' but in this case, 'attrib' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. So when using the KB822798 and trying to use CMD, it doesn't work. Apparently there is something wrong within the CMD command. Method 6: Set non-driver signing policy to silently succeed. When arriving at the Policy binary value, the current value is already set correctly at 0000 00. JR

Let's try a simple "attrib" *without* any quotation marks there. What's the exact (error) message you receive? Have you unsinstalled ZoneAlarm in the meantime and re-enabled Windows Firewall instead? If not, just do it. Bye, Freudi
Guest JR Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Hi Freudi, With respect to problems with the 'cmd' issue, as stated earlier... when using 'cmd' at START, RUN, and at the command prompt, I type the following command - net stop cryptsvc (which is one of the steps to be taken) I get this response 'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Another place it wants me to reregister several DLLs. That succeeds. Then it wants me to use the 'cmd' to run the same DLLs. When I type in a DLL, such as "regsvr32 /u softpub.dll" (without quotes on all this stuff), I get this response. 'regsvr32' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. So what I am saying, when I use cmd and get to the prompt, it doesn't work. Nothing is accepted although I copy and paste (or type in) the exact requirement to put in there - it will not accept my input. Regards
Guest JR Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Freudi, I have completely removed Zone Alarm from my computer, removed all remnants from the registry, and reactivated XP's firefall. I have also completed, with updates, a complete scan of my C drive, using avg, Adaware, Super antispyware, and a complete scan with a Trojan program. Machine is Clean... I will also note that when I began having these problems, can't access windows updates, that windows defender I always ran, is now not working. But that's other problems. Thanks!

Please hav a look into the Control Panel and choose "System" from there. In "System" click on "Advanced" and afterwards the "Environment variables" (at the bottom of the tab and the first button there, which may be named different). Now have a look on the "System variables" and scroll down to the "Path" variable. Mark the entry and hit the "Edit" button below. Make sure you find "C:\Windows\System32" in the "Value". If not, add it and hit "OK". Now have a look on the "PATHEXT", mark it and hit "Edit" once again. By default the "Value" should contain ".COM.EXE.BAT.CMD.VBS.VBE.JS.JSE.WSF.WSH.PSC1". Bye, Freudi
Guest JR Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Freudi, I just finished this up, and the results. In the PATH, and at VALUE, there was something about Ulead - a video program listed. I overrode that and typed in the CWINSYS32 and added it. Next, using the PATHEXT, all those items are listed except for the very last one... PSC1. So do I add that item to the value? Thanks! P.S. I'm very late but figured out that I had to put the checkmark in the "Include message in Reply" to keep this all together. This post is all messed up but if I have additional posts, I will remember that. Guest JR Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Freudi, I just now reran the cmd and typed in the attrib and it returned 12 entries. So maybe that is fixed now. Guest JR Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 To the best of my knowledge, they aren't running in the background, except for AVG.
