Guest Evergreen Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 My computer is a PC with XP SP2 behind a corporate firewall, and I have tried WU and MU with both IE6SP2 and IE7 (my current browser) installed, with always the resulting error 0x80072F78. This has been happening for months, and during that time I have regularly looked at the messages posted on this forum about this error, tried the suggestions in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941, http://tinyurl.com/cj84l, http://tinyurl.com/bfphs and more all to no avail, also tried looking at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=836985 but it does no longer exist, and well I am very tired of this and would like a working answer if anyone has it. Regards, Evergreen

Guest Evergreen Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 The link you provide is interesting but does not solve the matter. On that page the related issue is the first one, but the patch recommended is for systems pre-XPSP2 and pre- IE7 and is explicitly described as already included in XP SP2, which I have. The second issue seems unrelated and I could not apply it anyway since it consists in modifying the corporate proxy configuration, something I cannot do. I eagerly await further suggestions that could lead to finally solving this mystery. Guest Jim Byrd Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hi Evergreen - Try the following (directions are in IE6 terms, since I don't happen to have IE7 installed at the moment - just use the equivalents for IE7): 1. Close ALL instances of IE and/or OE. 2. In control panel, open Internet Options 3. On the General Tab, click Delete Files and also check and OK "Delete all offline content" 4. On the Advanced Tab, UNcheck "Enable third party browser extensions (requires restart)" 5. OK out, then Reboot, and then reboot again. Now try Windows Update (NOT Microsoft Update) again. (Yes, twice.) If that doesn't work, then proceed as follows: 1. Go to http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix and download Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24 (2006-10-27) Here's a direct download link: http://djlizard.net.nyud.net:8080/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip and a secondary: http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip from that page's download section, here: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles . 2. Unzip it to a new folder at root with any name, e.g. c:\Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24 3. Now double click on Dial-a-fix.exe in that folder. 4. Click on the following: - Options/tooltips (just to get an idea of what it does in each section. ) - Both boxes under Prep - The 'all' (top) box for Sections 2, 3 and 4 (which will automatically be set when you check 3) - In Section 3 click on 'Flush Software Distribution' and choose 'Yes' when asked if you want to preserve Windows Update History. - In Section 5, select "ActiveX controls/codecs', 'Programming cores/runtimes', 'Explorer/IE/OE/shell/WMP', and 'Object linking libraries (OLE)' only. - Click 'Go' . (Some of the re-registrations may take what seems like a very long time for some .dll's - Don't be impatient.) 5. Reboot. Now Reboot Again. (Yes, twice.) See if that does the trick. If not, then restart Dial-a-Fix, click on Tools, then select and execute in order the "Reinstall Automatic Updates service" and "Reinstall BITS". Reboot. Now Reboot Again. (Yes, twice.) Now, redo steps 3 thru 5, above. See if that does it, and please post back with your experience. -- Regards, Jim Byrd, My Blog, Defending Your Machine, http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ In news:B2F4F04E-314D-4F5F-BFC0-D32895D0D364@microsoft.com, Evergreen <Evergreen@discussions.microsoft.com> typed: || The link you provide is interesting but does not solve the matter. || On that page the related issue is the first one, but the patch || recommended is for systems pre-XPSP2 and pre- IE7 and is explicitly || described as already included in XP SP2, which I have.
