Guest andyra Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 It seems each time the computer does updates, it stops working properly. I have re-installed a few times now, and I don't have the time to constantly do this. Currently internet explorer isn't working and the computer wants to restart and install updates and I don't want it to. I don't want updates automatically if they are just going to wreck everything.

Or that was the 'easiest' fix you could think of? Have you considered turning off Automatic Updates and using http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and checking after the second Tuesday of each month manually? Guest andyra Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 We are using Vista home. I called the manufacturers support line and their solution was to restore to factory defaults or to reinstall, telling me that a lot of their customers are having these problems when the updates installed. We just bought this computer, I work for a small non-profit agency, so getting a new computer was a big thing around here, and now it really doesn't live up to our expectations, although our old machine was slow, I much preferred the reliability of XP. I wish we could install XP on this machine actually, I think it would make everyone happier. However, purchasing a copy would be hard on our small operating budget. Guest PA Bear Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 > ...Currently internet explorer isn't working and the computer wants > to restart and install updates and I don't want it to Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818 If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don' help, try the following: 1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall. NB: If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it. You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing reading email chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus application has been re-enabled! 2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB939653)" [or "Security Update for Windows XP (KB939653)"] via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right) and reboot. 3. Re-do #1 above. 4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's additional security. 5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party firewall. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ andyra wrote: > It seems each time the computer does updates, it stops working properly. > I > have re-installed a few times now, and I don't have the time to constantly > do this. Guest Bill Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Andyra, I have a dell inspiron 2650 with 256mb ram and 1.6 gh processor and since downloading the updates, my computer takes ages to open up from switching on (approx 12mins) and it takes forever to connect to the internet. Most times it says "No Connection" and I have to restart the whole operation. Any suggestions? Bill. "andyra" wrote: > It seems each time the computer does updates, it stops working properly.
