I updated security updat for Microsoft XML core services 4.0 Service pack2.

It was

KB936181. When I shut down my pc it said click to install updates. Did that

now every time I shut down the same thing happens. I looked at my download

history, and the KB936181 is listed about 14 times. When I look at my Add or

Remove Programs on my control panel it's not listed. Any ideas?

Also, I don't know if this is affected by this, but I can't receive any

e-mails since this has happened.

Many thanks

Dave

Something is blocking the final copy/rename of the module(s) during the boot.

Apparently it should only be one module: msxml3.dll

So what version of it do you have before and after the boot?

Tip: you can use the registry value PendingFileRenameOperations

before the boot to find the name of the module which is to be copied

or renamed. You may also be able to find more clues about what

still needs to be done in the Event log or in a verbose install log.

Hmm... I have that module but I don't have that update?

Where did it come from then? Looks like I may have got it from KB936021

somehow? If so, the TechNet Bulletin for it needs to be updated... o

Depending on the E-mail service and client you are using that could

indeed be related to XML support. What about other specific XML

tests did you try, such as browsing a saved copy of XP's Network Diagnostics

report?
