Guest karen Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 The only thing I can get into if the main screen comes up (NO ICONS) is ctl/alt/del, and if the update comes up it will do it before the main screen so I cannot do anything except shut it down from the hard drive. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Boot to Safe Mode: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true Show hidden files, folders, and system files: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp Using Windows Explorer [start > All Programs > Accessories], navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution Open the Download subfolder and delete all of it's contents Do the same for the EventCache subfolder Now open the DataStore subfolder Delete the DataStore.edb file [NOTE: This will delete the history shown on the Windows | Microsoft Update sites] Open the Logs subfolder in DataStore and delete all of it's contents Close Windows Explorer Open the Automatic Updates applet in the Control Panel and set it to " Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them " Click Apply, OK Restart the system to normal Windows mode When you are notified that there are updates available to be installed [the yellow icon will appear in the Notification Area, click it] disconnect the system from any net/network connection TOTALLY disable the installed antivirus software from monitoring the system. This includes all services run by the AV. Consult the Help file of said AV or the manufacturer's web site to learn how this is accomplished. Approve the installation of the updates by clicking on the yellow icon in the Notification Area. Restart the system after the updates install. *BEFORE* reconnecting the system, *REENABLE* the installed antivirus.
