Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and Bela

Hello.

Trend Micro Housecall reported as a vulnerability in my system the missing

update 'Vulnerability in Microsoft JScript Could Allow Remote Code Execution

(917344)'. See this screenshot:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=dlattachtopic=30962.0attach=18579

The link on Housecall report directs to the Microsoft Security Bulletin

MS06-023, published in June 13, 2006. In the same Bulletin, under 'Affected

components', the one that corresponds to my OS is 'Microsoft JScript 5.6 on

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2'.

In Windows Control Panel>Add and Remove programs.

I also downloaded and installed the utility 'Belarc Advisor', available in

http://www.belarc.com/. It also detected the same vulnerability in my System:

«Installed Microsoft Hotfixes

....

X KB917344 on 06-08-2007 (details...) Reinstall!»

I searched through all of my Windows updates installed and didn't found

KB917344. I also went to Microsoft Update Website and it doesn't detect any

priority update missing in my system.

I don't know if i should install manually this update, alone or with

'Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)' -see Caveats in

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-023. Question is, since these updates were

published on June 2006, how do i know if i have installed a more recent

Windows update or Windows component which replace the missing updates, and

are they really necessary? Is there the risk that they may deactivate or

conflict with an already installed update? Why aren't they detected as

priority updates to download in the Microsoft Update website?

Check the version of jscript.dll located in WINDOWS\system32

If it is at V.5.6.0.8831, then KB917344 is installed.

You can also check in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist

There should be 3 subfolders under Filelist, 0,1, and 2

If the version of jscript.dll is not 5.6.0.8831, then suggest you

reinstall KB917344:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D28C02BE-CAC3-4579-9B93-939FD5D3CDE6

As to the Cumulative Update for IE, it is just that, cumulative. If

KB939653 is installed [the latest Cumulative update for IE] then there

is no need to install KB916281.

Did you delete folders from/or have you deleted WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ ?

That *may* be why the updates are detected as not being applied by TMH

and Belarc.

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and B.A.

CORRECTED in post #1: In Windows Control Panel>Add and remove programs, i

searched through all of my Windows updates installed and didn't found

KB917344. I also went to Microsoft Update Website and it doesn't detect any

priority update missing in my system.

ADDED to post #1: Don't know if it's relevant to this thread, but my OS is

Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600), and i have Internet Explorer 7.

_______________________________________________

Thank you, MowGreen. I was glad to see your reply. I believe it will be

meaningfull for the resolution of this problem.

I searched and found the file jscript.dll in WINDOWS\system32. I

rick-clicked it, selected properties, and checked its version: it’s V.

5.6.0.8825, not V. 5.6.0.8831.

However, I think that the Windows registry does not match my jscript.dll

version. I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist. Under Filelist, I have 3 subfolders: 0, 1, and 2.

If I click each of this subfolders, I see in the last line of the right pane:

Version REG_SZ 5.6.0.8831

I exported the registry branch, opened it with Notepad, and copied it. I’m

pasting it here:

«Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist\0]

"FileName"="jscript.dll"

"Version"="5.6.0.8831"

"BuildDate"="Thu May 18 06:31:27 2006"

"BuildCheckSum"="74cd3"

"Location"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist\1]

"FileName"="jscript.dll"

"Version"="5.6.0.8831"

"BuildDate"="Thu May 18 06:31:27 2006"

"BuildCheckSum"="74cd3"

"Location"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\DllCache"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows

XP\SP3\KB917344\Filelist\2]

"FileName"="jscript.dll"

"Version"="5.6.0.8831"

"BuildDate"="Thu May 18 06:46:54 2006"

"BuildCheckSum"="73b06"

"Location"="c:\\windows\\$hf_mig$\\KB917344\\SP2QFE"»

I believe that my Windows registry keys correspond to version 5.6.0.8831,

and not to the version I have, and perhaps that’s the reason why the

Microsoft Update website doesn’t prompt me to install KB917344. Is this right

? Should I download and reinstall manually KB917344 ?

There’s another thing I haven’t told in post#1: Belarc Advisor but not TM

Housecall failed also the verification of the last IE7 cumulative update

KB939653. However, I searched in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and I

found it under ‘Windows Internet Explorer 7 – Software Updates’. I think it’s

probably a false detection of security vulnerability by Belarc. But how can I

confirm if KB939653-IE7 is correctly installed in my system ?

Finally, and answering to your last question, I didn’t delete any folders

from nor have deleted WINDOWS\$hf_mig$.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH andB.A.

Check system32\dllcache for the Version of jscript.dll, please. It

appears that 'something' did not allow the file to be updated but did

allow the change in the registry.

If the copy of jscript.dll is V. 5.6.0.8831 then see if you can copy it

over to WINDOWS\system32 and replace the older V.

If the V. in system32/dllcache is the older one, then yes, reinstall the

update. Make sure that THM is temporarily disabled prior to installing

it, including any service that monitors the system.

Remember to reenable THM after installing the update.

As for the IE Cumulative Update, you can compare file versions of the

system with the file versions of the update here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS07-057.mspx

Under 'Update Information', click the plus sign next to 'Security Update

Deployment'

Then click on 'Windows XP (all editions)' and, finally, 'File Information'

It's a rather long list and the page is loading slowly here.

There is a Known Issue with some AVs in regards to the update that

states that IE 7 can not display web pages:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

It is possible that the update did not install properly. So, suggest you

uninstall it, reboot, redownload it from here, and do the temp disabling

of THM prior to installing it, too:

I can't find system32\dllcache ! Is it a subfolder of C:\Windows\system32 ? I

searched the entire hard drive for it.

Can you please specify what do you mean by 'THM' and 'AVs' ? Sorry about my

lack of knowledge. I'm just a regular user-)

No problemo. I 'meant' TMH ... Trend Micro Housecall, not THM.

AVs means antivirus software ...

In order to view the dllcache folder you will have to show hidden files,

folders, and sytem files:

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and BA

OK, while i was waiting for your last reply, i did a google search on

"dllcache" and found that to access the dllcache folder, i only had to click

on the 'Start' button, then 'Run' and type C:\Windows\system32\dllcache. That

worked. In there, i found a jscript.dll file. It is v. 5.6.0.8825, so i'm

gonna download and install manually the KB917344 update.

About TMH, i've used the Java-based Housecall kernel (not the "Browser

plug-in" Housecall kernel), so that Housecall could run on my system and scan

it. I don't know how to disable or uninstall it. But since Housecall is just

an online scanner, it is used only "on-demand", it doesn't permanently

monitors my system. Do i really have to disable it ?

I only used TMH once, to complement my installed antivirus application, and

scan a suspicious file in my system.

About KB939653-IE7, before starting this thread, i already uninstalled and

reinstalled it (through Microsoft Update site), but even after that, Belarc

Advisor still failed verification of that update, it couldn't find it

installed (altough i could found it in "Add/Remove" programs). However, i

believe i didn't disabled my avast AV before reinstalling the update.

I tried also to compare file versions in my system with the file versions of

the files contained in the update for only 2 or 3 files, using the 'File

Information' in

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS07-057.mspx (i'm not

willing to ckeck version for ALL the files listed under 'File Information' as

they're too many !). But it's difficult, because when i search in my system

for, say, advpack.dll, 11 files with the same filename appear in the search

results. Among them, advpack.dll located in C:\WINDOWS\ie7 is v.

6.0.2900.2180, but advpack.dll located in C:\WINDOWS\system32 is v.

7.0.6000.16544 (the latter match the version of the one listed in MS07-057

bulletin). Isn't there a simpler way to do this, and verify if KB939653 is

correctly applied in my system ?

Thanks in advance...

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and B.A.

For your information, with my IE7:

KB917344 does not show in the add/remove under Windows Updates.

That is because installation of IE7 hides it, as it updates the jscript.dll to

5.7.

Belarc does show for me as installed properly.

Check it here:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB917344]

"RegistryLocation"="HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Updates\\Windows

XP\\SP3\\KB917344"

"HiddenByIE7Setup"=dword:00000001

Also examine the ie7.log and see if you have something like this:

IECUSTOM: Hiding update 'KB917344' MS06-023: Vulnerability in Microsoft JScript

Copied file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\jscript.dll

Copied file (delayed): C:\WINDOWS\system32\SET73.tmp

Source:C:\WINDOWS\system32\SET73.tmp (5.7.0.5730)

Destination:C:\WINDOWS\system32\jscript.dll (5.6.0.8831)

The "C:\WINDOWS\ie7" folder is the uninstall IE7 information.

They represent your files they would restore.

They also show the jscript.dll that they would restore (should be v.5.6.08831)

The "C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates" folder shows current ie7updates.

I don't know what caused your problem but maybe this will help explain.

You do not have to disable TMH. You *should* disable the installed

antivirus software as apparently it has prevented jscript.dll from being

updated properly. Which AV is installed ?

Trend offers no guidance for uninstalling TMH, isn't that special <w>?

I played with the ActiveX and java based versions of it, but do not

recall specifically how I uninstalled both.

If it's not listed in Add/Remove Programs than look in the Documents and

Settings\All Users\Application Data subfolder or, in

Docs&Settings\<YourUserAccount>\Application Data,

Local Settings\Application Data, and Temp subfolders for a Trend folder

Deleting the Trend folder will remove the download definition files

As to the IE update ... once again, *strongly* advise you to disable the

installed antivirus software prior to installing it. Consult the Help

file or the manufacturer's web site to learn how this is accomplished.

ALL services of the installed AV should be temp disabled, too.

You can download a 'fresh' KB939653 from here:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

Service Pack 2 (KB939653)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=22&p=2&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=&u=%2fdownloads%2fdetails.aspx%3fFamilyID%3d4ca0ac93-bf51-40fe-a1ba-cb3e0a36d8b5%26DisplayLang%3den

The files that are updated are located in system32. Don't worry about

the other ones, it's hard enough going over the Versions listed in system32.

Disabling the AV *should* allow the files to be updated to the proper

Version and allow the updating of jscript.dll.

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and

To mae:

I followed the instructions on

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp , then

searched for ie7.log using the Windows search tool. The only file found in C:

containing 'ie7.log' in the filename was KB939653-IE7.log, located in

C:\WINDOWS. I opened it and searched for 'IECUSTOM' and 'jscript.dll' using

'CTRL+F', but found none of those words.

In "C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates", there is a subfolder "KB939653-IE7". In there, i

looked version number of 'Iexplore.exe', 'Advpack.dll', and 'Dxtrans.dll',

and none of them is v. 7.0.6000.16544, which is the right version number of

'Iexplore.exe', 'Advpack.dll', and 'Dxtrans.dll' contained in the

KB939653-IE7 update ("for Internet Explorer 7 for all supported 32-bit

editions of Windows XP"), according to Microsoft MS07-057 Bulletin. So, I

suppose that the files in "C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates\KB939653-IE7" are the ones

to be restored, replacing my present files in the case i uninstall KB939653.

Is that right ?

Likewise: In "C:\WINDOWS\ie7", I have a jscript.dll file and it is

v.5.6.0.8831. So, if i uninstalled IE7, my jscript.dll file in

"C:\WINDOWS\system32" would be replaced by this version, right ? But if you

say that the installation of IE7 updates jscript.dll to 5.7, then how would

you explain that presently, and having IE7 installed, my version of

jscript.dll in "C:\WINDOWS\system32" is only v.5.6.0.8825 ? Your jscript.dll

is version 5.7, right ?

I believe my situation is different than yours...

And your post raises yet another problem: If i reinstall manually KB917344

as i intended, then my jscript.dll would become v.5.6.0.8831, but since i

have IE7 installed, it should be v.5.7. Isn't that so ?

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and

As you had the correct jscript file at the time you installed ie7,

(as shown in your registry and the "C:\WINDOWS\ie7" folder)

"something" - has caused some corruption or older version to be installed.

(maybe ie7 does not install jscript 5.7 for everyone- I don't know)

If ie7 installed properly, you should have :

C:\WINDOWS\ie7.log

C:\WINDOWS\ie7_main.log

(assuming you use "c" )

ie7updates folder are the updates to IE applied after installing ie7

and that are available for uninstallation. They show replaced files.

I would follow Mr. Green's instruction (and hereafter)

to download and install KB917344 then the cumulative IE update

If everything working properly, then update to this:

"Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP"

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=47809025-D896-482E-A0D6-524E7E844D81&displaylang=en

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and BA

First, to answer MowGreen: I have Avast AV installed in my system. Usually, i

do not disable it prior to installing Windows updates. Most times, i don't

disable it even before installing other programs, but to date, i never noted

any installation problem caused by Avast being running in the background.

Perhaps i should disable it before any installation from now on ? That would

be impossible to manage if i had 'Windows Update' configured to automatically

download and install updates...

To my view, what MowGreen said *is not* compatible with what mae said in

post#9. *Read the following quotes* to see what i mean:

"MowGreen [MVP]" wrote:

«

Check the version of jscript.dll located in WINDOWS\system32

If it is at V.5.6.0.8831, then KB917344 is installed.

(...)

If the version of jscript.dll is not 5.6.0.8831, then suggest you reinstall

KB917344

(...)

If the V. in system32/dllcache is the older one, then yes, reinstall the

update.

»

"mae" wrote:

«

For your information, with my IE7:

KB917344 does not show in the add/remove under Windows Updates.

That is because installation of IE7 hides it, as it updates the jscript.dll

to

5.7.

»

That is, according to mae, I should have jscript.dll v.5.7, since I have IE7

installed. But according to MowGreen, it was expected that I had jscript.dll

v.5.6.0.8831, and by following his recommendations, i would end up with

jscript.dll v.5.6.0.8831 in C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Another thing. I *don't have* both:

C:\WINDOWS\ie7.log

C:\WINDOWS\ie7_main.log

(My Windows OS is installed in the C: partition of my HD)

Like i said in post#10,the only file I have in C:\WINDOWS containing

'ie7.log' in the filename is KB939653-IE7.log. Should I assume that IE7 was

not installed properly ?

Considering what's been said, i'd like to try the following solution:

1. Uninstall IE7

2. Check again version of jscript.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32. If it is

v.5.6.0.8831 (like the one i have in C:\WINDOWS\ie7), there's no need to

install KB917344. If jscript.dll is v.5.6.0.8825 (like it is now), then

reinstall KB917344.

3. Reinstall IE7

4. Reinstall the cumulative IE update KB939653.

This solution seems to be more radical than the ones proposed, but it also

seems to be the more reliable to me. Do you see any potential problem or

inconvenient in doing this ?

Post the contents of KB939653-IE7.log and we'll see which files have

been installed to which locations and the Version number of them.

FWIW, I've never had any issues with Avast when installing updates, just

connecting to certain sites.

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and BA

Apologise me, i'm not familiarized with certain acronyms. What does 'FWIW'

mean ? I should write a glossary...)

Thank you for helping. Here is the contents of KB939653-IE7.log. Most is

written in English, but a few words are written in portuguese. I'll translate

the following:

In Portuguese: "3.484: A configuração do KB939653 encontrou um erro: O

ficheiro update.ver não está correcto."

In English: "3.484: The KB939653 setup has found an error: The file

update.ver is not correct."

In Portuguese: "Ficheiro copiado (adiado)"

In English: "Copied file (postponed)" *OR* "Copied file (delayed)" ?

If you find any more, please let me know and i'll try to translate them.

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH andBA

FWIW = for what it's worth

The update appears to have installed correctly.

I tried to find a file list for IE7 but could not. Am unaware that

jscript.dll is updated to Version 5.7 by the installation of IE7.

I *doubt* that is the case as installing Windows Script 5.7 updates

jscript.dll, but I could be wrong.

According to the Security Bulletin page:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-057.mspx

When KB939653 is installed there is an entry made in Add/Remove

Programs. Since I do not have IE7 installed, I'm assuming that it would

show under 'Windows XP - Software updates' or, directly under the entry

made for the installation of IE7.

Recommend you do what you'd posted previously:

Besides Avast, is there any other security software installed [spybot

Search&Destroy, etc] ?

Thanks for the link ! It will certainly be useful. I'll add it to my

'Favorites'. I noted that 'AV'=Antivirus isn't listed there. It should be

added.

Now, back to the problem.

Mowgreen:

Besides Avast, i have also Spybot-S&D, Ad-Aware 2007 (Free Edition),

SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender installed, but from these 4, only Windows

Defender has real time protection monitoring my system in the background.

Spybot-S&D has two additional resident protection modules: Resident

"SDHelper" and Resident "TeaTimer". "SDHelper" is a Internet explorer bad

download blocker. It is an IE add-on (Browser Helper Object) that blocks any

content coming from a list of known malware sites when i'm browsing the web.

I always have it enabled. "TeaTimer" protects over-all system settings. I

never activated it.

I also have Peerguardian 2. It blocks IPs from selected lists. Most of the

time i only have the 'Spyware' list of IPs enabled. PG2 works at the kernel

level (don't know what this means).

Yesterday, I couldn't wait for MowGreen's reply. My browser stop responding

for 2 times, when closing IE7 window, and I felt an urge to solve this

without more delays. So, I did the following:

*Step 1.* I had at least 4 IE7 updates listed in 'Add or Remove programs'. I

didn't know if i should uninstall them all before uninstalling IE7, or if I

should uninstall only IE7, hoping all the IE7 updates to be automatically

uninstalled in the process. I uninstalled only the KB939653, then I

uninstalled IE7.

*Step 2.* After uninstalling IE7, i noted that KB917344 appeared in my 'Add

and Remove programs' (it was hidden before by IE7) and also noted that

jscript.dll on WINDOWS\system32 was now v.5.6.0.8831.

Also, after uninstalling IE7, one last IE7 update remained in the 'Add or

Remove programs'. I chose to remove it, and clicked on 'Continue' when an

*annoying* dialog box showed up, warning me about a list of programs *and

Windows updates* that might not work correctly if that update was removed.

*Step 3.* I downloaded and reinstalled Internet Explorer 7. During IE7

installation, I was given the option to download and install immediately any

IE7 updates along with the IE7 installation (the same checkbox allowed also

to download and run immediately the Microsoft latest malware removal tool). I

ticked that checkbox, and started the installation, but at the end of the

process, i was told that not all the IE7 updates were successfully installed,

and that i should reboot my computer, then open Internet Explorer and go to

the 'Windows Update' site to install any remainder updates.

*Step 4.* The first thing i did after reboot was to check jscript.dll

version. It was Version 5.7.0.5730 !! "mae" was right...

I also cheched 'Add or Remove programs': Under ‘Windows Internet Explorer 7

– Software Updates’, the only IE7 update listed was KB939653. Then, i went to

'Microsoft Update' site. It found only one IE7 update missing: KB938127. I

downloaded and installed it.

I think it's curious that before *Step 1.* i had 4 IE7 updates listed in

'Add or Remove programs', and now i'm reduced to only 2.

*Step 5.* I reinstalled Belarc Advisor and ran it. Now, it no longer detects

KB917344 as a missing update -*one problem less*-, but it still detects

KB939653-IE7 as missing:

« Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes

KB939653-IE7 - Critical (details...) These required security hotfixes

(using the 10/09/2007 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) were not found

installed. Note: CIS benchmarks require that Critical and Important severity

security hotfixes must be installed.»

*Step 6.* I uninstalled KB939653 and reinstalled it (via automatic updates).

Then, ran Belarc A. again, but it still failed verification of KB939653-IE7.

Have I done something wrong through steps 1-5 ? Or Belarc reported a 'false

positive'? I'd like to know the answer. Any suggestions ?

Two more notes:

Note 1. In *Step 3.*, before downloading IE7, I went to 'Microsoft Update'

site, and it prompted me to install missing KB939653 for IE6. I didn't

download it, as i was going to install IE7.

Note 2. Before installing IE7 and IE7 updates, i disabled both Avast and

Windows Defender.

P.S. I did steps 1-6 yesterday, before MowGreen post. I didn't post this

yesterday, because only now i finished writing the present post. It took me

long, and I wasn't able to finish it yesterday.

During the installlation of IE7 it is HIGHLY recommended that one

disable Automatic Updates :

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

If one allows Automatic Updates during the install of IE7 that means

that files that are being written to the HardDrive are being replaced by

files downloaded from AU either while they're being written or right

afterwards. Not good practice, IMHO.

Just allow the files to be written and then reenable AU.

Thanks for posting the Version of jscript.dll that is installed with

IE7. It's too bad that Microsoft hasn't published a file list as they

did for previous versions of IE.

Now, as to Spybot ... although it's not active it can/will cause issues

when TeaTimer is enabled when updates are installed.

Disable TeaTimer either right before updating or all together.

Said issues can/will occur when the system is installing updates from

either of the Update sites, not when using Automatic Updates.

That's because TeaTimer monitors/blocks ActiveX components and the

Update sites use that component [wuweb.dll for Windows Update muweb.dll

for Microsfot Update] during the updating process.

SDHelper is totally useless, IMO. Your mileage may vary [YMMV )]

Re: Missing Windows update reported as a vulnerability by TMH and

This time i did things differently, and followed the latest MowGreen

recommendation. I ended up with only KB939653 listed under ‘Windows Internet

Explorer 7 – Software Updates’ in my 'Add or Remove programs' instead of both

KB939653 and KB938127. However KB938127-IE7 is listed in Belarc's report

under 'Installed Microsoft Hotfixes', so i guess it is just "hidden" in my

'Add or Remove programs'.

On the other hand, Belarc A. still reports KB939653-IE7 as a *missing*

update. It still appears under 'Missing Microsoft Security Hotfixes' in

Belarc's report.

Steps done:

*Step 1.* I disabled Windows automatic updates, and also disabled Avast,

Windows Defender real time protection, and even "SDHelper"(although it

probably wasn't necessary). No need to disable "TeaTimer" since i always have

it disabled.

*Step 2.* I uninstalled IE7, without previously uninstalling any IE7 update.

After reboot, i checked 'Add or Remove programs'. Both IE7 and all the IE7

updates (2 updates) were not listed.

*Step 3.* I disabled again Avast resident protection, since after reboot it

was automatically re-enabled. I installed IE7. This time, i didn't put a

checkmark in the checkbox asking to download the latest IE7 updates and the

malware removal tool during IE7 installation.

*Step 4.* I reboot twice. Then re-enabled Automatic Updates (configured it

to automatically download updates but to not install them whithout asking me

first). AU downloaded just the KB939653 update for IE7. I disabled Avast once

more, and installed the downloaded update. Reboot.

*Step 5.* I ran Belarc A.. Once more, it failed verification of KB939653-IE7.

*Step 6.* I disabled again AU. I uninstalled KB939653, rebooted, and

disabled Avast. Then installed manually the KB939653 for IE7, by running

'IE7-WindowsXP-KB939653-x86-PTG.exe' which i had stored before in my HD.

*Step 7.* Reboot and reconfigured AU to notify me about any existing

updates, but to only transfer and install them after i tell to. This is my

usual AU configuration. Then, ran again Belarc A. Same disappointing

result... >:-( Perhaps a 'false positive' ? No way to know for sure.

No more steps !

It's curious that from 3 or 4 IE7 updates listed in 'Add or Remove

programs', i passed to 2, and now, from 2, i passed to just one.

Mowgreen: You say that SDHelper is totally useless, but you don't explain

why. To me, it's been useful, IMHO. For instance, it alerted me that Spybot

blocked '/Avenue A, Inc.' or 'Doubleclick' when i was entering certain sites,

including when going to sites that i considered "safe", such as

http://www.download.com. I believe that for most of the times, SDHelper was blocking

malware content coming not directly from the site itself, but instead from

some third party advertising company which was displaying ads in that site.

But nevertheless, i consider it is useful to be warned whenever

malware-delivering URLs (third party or not) are stopped from dumping trash

in my PC. Just my opinion (JMO).

As english is not my language, i don't know what the expression 'Your

mileage may vary' means. I checked 'mileage' in one online english

dictionary, but it makes no sense )

It was blocking Cookies, not malware. You can easily do that by adding

the sites to a Host file, or, use this Host file:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Don't use Belarc as the 'bible'. The way to determine that KB939653 is

installed properly is to have the system scanned at either Windows or

Microsoft update and then go over the Security bulletin to ensure that

the files are at their correct Versions and that the registry shows that

the update has been applied successfully.
