Guest sdavies2720 Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I repaired my XP install due to a corrupted Norton Internet Security installation. Windows Update has downloaded 84 fixes, but when I try to install them, I get an error that the install has failed (this is true whether I select all, or just some of the patches). Unfortunately, going to the install history does not show anything since I repaired the install. So I have no error codes. Anyone have a suggestion how to proceed?

Search using Google! http://www.google.com/ (How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html ) Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 Can't figure that out? Get Dial-a-Fix: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix Use its options to fix: - Windows Installer - Windows Update - All the Registration Center options. Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2" Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution". Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed. - Download/Install Windows Update v3. http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe (You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.) - Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A - Reboot. - Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates. - Come back and let us know how things went! -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

I missed that notice in the support database. Steve
Guest jb81 Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 i tried this suggestion from microsoft support but this did not work: Step 1: Download SubInACL (SubInACL.exe) ----------------------------------------- 1. Please download the subinacl.msi from the following link and save the installation patch on the Desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en> 2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file to install it. 3. Please select C:\Windows\System32 as the destination folder during the Iinstallation (Note: We assume C:\ is the system partition). Later we will use this tool to reset the current permission settings on the machine. Step 2: ------- 1. Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\reset.cmd and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: @echo off subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f @Echo ========================= @Echo Finished. @Echo ========================= @pause 3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Yes when you are prompted to, then luckily i was able to see the discussion on this problem i went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 and followed the directions and all 76 updates were installed "Shenan Stanley" wrote: > sdavies2720 wrote: > > I repaired my XP install due to a corrupted Norton Internet Security > > installation. Guest MikeGorman Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 I used the instructions per your directions and they worked.... The part that failed from the directions was the "Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A" It told me that something that should have been done was not completed.... Wow, that sure was a clue... ahem.... So, I went back and did everything including wiping out the history of updates, that is, I did the ""Flush SoftwareDistribution". Then I went to bed.... This AM I awoke to find that MotherBill had secretely installed the "Installer." I then had it put in the "Advantage." THEN I was able to get the 10 skillion security updates... Came back there to say THANKS.... and also then saw the link to the explanation about XP/repair from CD... SO thanks all.... Now I'm off to the PayPal site to make a donation.... Regards, Mike Gorman
