Fresh Re-Install of XP SP1. When to install XP SP2?

Recommended Posts

I am working on a relative's older HP Pavilion XT963, and had to do a

non-destructive recovery of the system, which means it reinstalls all

the OEM factory installed operating system and programs, but leaves data

files, and after-market programs mostly intact.

So, now I have a fresh install of XP SP1 on this computer.

I have the XP SP2 upgrade on CD right from Microsoft. Should I do any

critical updates through the MS Windows Update site, before I install XP

SP2, or should I install the upgrade first, and then do the rest of the

updates through the Windows Update website?

As a side note, there is no broadband connection for this machine yet,

so these updates would be done via dial-up, or I would consider letting

Win XP auto-update to SP2.

Any suggestions?

Install SP2 immediately before the machine touches the Internet in any way.

Also - dial-up? There are 80+ updates after SP2 - expect 24-48 hours of

download unless you just get all the updates for them, copy them to

CD/DVD/USB drive and bring it to the machine.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Ron,

Suggest you show hidden files, folders, and system files:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Next, using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

Is there a ReportingEvents.log resident there ?

If yes, then open it and see if there are any entries.

The log shows all updates that were successfully installed.

IF the log shows updates have been installed then, in effect, this is a

Repair Installation of XP.

You would then need to delete the contents of the following subfolders:

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache

IF there is no or an empty copy of ReportingEvents.log, then this was a

clean installation of XP. You do not need to deal with any of the above.

Install SP2 after reading this:

Preparing for installation

http://winhlp.com/WxSP2.htm#Preparing_for_installation

After the required restart, use the dial up connection to access the

Windows Update site and update the software components required to

update XP.

Whether you then use WU or Automatic Updates to install the updates

published after SP2 came out is up to you.

If possible, highly recommend that you connect the system to a broadband

connection as there are quite a number of updates.

NOTE: If you find this was a Repair installation then you will have to

register one .dll file after first visiting the WU site and updating the

software components. Go to Start > Run > type in

cmd

Click OK or press Enter

At the Command Prompt type in the following, pressing Enter after each:

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wups2.dll

net start wuauserv

exit

Restart the system

Just wanted to say thanks to you and MowGreen. SP2 is now installed and

all critical updates applied to date that are available.

It only took about 5 hours via dial-up once I got SP2 installed. -)

I intentionally skipped the .Net Framework updates until I get it hooked

up to a broadband connection.
