To add - Dunk says to have tried both of these solutions:

(without it fixing the issue.)

These two:

(1)

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,

from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after

you repair a Windows XP installation

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(2)

Get Dial-a-Fix:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:

- Windows Installer

- Windows Update

- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"

right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Hello Dunk,

I'd suggest If you have a root-kit detector installed, run that, if none is

installed, try F-Secure Online Virus Scanner:

http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

Download Superantispyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/supe....html?rid=3132

Run Ewido (now known as AVG Anti-Spyware)

http://www.ewido.net/en

Also I would suggest running a HijackThis to see if your computer is

infected.

Please read this guide before actually doing the procedure

And it has all of the links for downloads you need.

Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people (MVPs) will be along soon.

Good luck

Dunk,

Pay attention. I know you are frustrated, so let me explain the post to you

despite it being fairly clear from the first sentence of my reply... That

answer was *NOT* for your direct benefit. It was for the benefit of anyone

and everyone else that *might* choose to look into your problem. They have

NO IDEA what it is you have tried - and since you chose to leave out what

you have tried AGAIN in your posting - I felt at liberty to make sure those

reading your new post on the same problem you have posted about before got

to know that you have tried the standard 'tried and true' methods that fixes

most people's issues in this case.

I am trying to help you help yourself. Otherwise - yes - you were BOUND to

get one or both of those answers again - because despite what you MIGHT

think about people who answer questions on newsgroups - most of them cannot

read minds and they cannot see your screen and logs and they cannot see the

piece of paper you printed out with lists of things to try to fix the

problem. You have to give complete details in a single post or

conversation... Not start a new post and 'add new details' thinking someone

will use their valuable time to review your past posts on the matter - if

they even bother to guess you might have some.

In other words - if you want help - be friendly to those trying to help you

and try to provide them with the information they don't have because they

are not directly involved.

Also note that you mentioned that there is more updates available and

failing than you have listed, but they are not critical updates. Many of

the ones you listed are not either.

Example(s):

- The NVidia driver update - do *not* get driver (hardware) updates from

Microsoft unless the hardware in question is a Microsoft product. Go to the

manufacturer's web page and get them there.

- .NET Framework 2.0 and/or 3.0 (If you have nothing that uses it - NVidia

software *might* - then you don't need these two.)

- Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 (You need this only if you want the latest

version and/or will be connnecting to Vista machines - notice you will still

have to currently disable NLA on the Vista machines.)

Help those reading your posts help you. Maintain a single thread - try to

format the posts so they are legible and give as much information (including

what you have tried) in said posting. Don't assume anyone knows you, your

problem or what your capabilities are. They don't. You are among blind

strangers here as far as you should be concerned. However - these blind

strangers just may have the answer you need.

The idea to post anew isn't really a bad one - as buried as some of your

other posts were (some of them were replies to other people's posts and not

your own thread on the matter.)

I do *not* work for Microsoft. I voluntarily answer questions in these

newsgroups just to try and help when I can. A lot of problems that show up

get repeated over and over - thus my identical answers in some cases. No

reason to re-write the good answer until it fails to work. I am as

interested in the solution to your problem as you are in some ways - as it's

a surprise that the other methods did not work.

The only thing I would suggest at this point is a repair install of Windows

XP followed by the advice from the first of the two solutions I give. That

way if somehting in the Windows XP installation is awry - the repair install

should catch it and then the Windows Update issue that is bound to arise

after the repair install will be fixed by the original advice.
