Same problem as with other posts including the ever present icon shield.

I'll add to the list: automatic download when computer is turned off. Update

History download status suceeded (green check mark). History indicates no

failure of the download. History shows 13 suceeded(green check marks)

downloads since July 11, 2007. Do I follow previous post solutions or do I

follow another set of instructions? Any suggestions?

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or

anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG

Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA).

Took me a few to figure this out so I posted twice with no message. Sorry!

Your tip perfect! Shield gone. Must I uninstall .net Framework 1.1 listed

in Add/Remove Programs and download again as other posts indicate? And,

should I disable firewall/anti virus when doing so. Ya done good! Much

appreciated. I'm very pleased.

What applications did you disable, Dick?

Is Windows Update offering you any (more) critical security updates?

I apologize for the delay. I was unsure of how much I should include.

Robear, my issue is resolved. No shield, no notice of pending updates.

Completed tonight with help from MS Update Support Professional. I have you

gmail and if you would like me to copy the e-mails I would be happy to do

that with added comments. For all I know the problem is resolved for all.

I would Subject the e-mails texas928366. By the way, following your tip, the

shield did disappear only to return.

Okay. Here is the most important of the messages. Completing Step 3

corrected the issue. The dotted lines were the screeshots I sent. I don't

know how to get them on this page.

> Henry: Steps 1 and 2 completed successfully. Issue still exists. .NET Framework 1.1 removed from Microsoft Windows Installer cache.

See Attach. Does it make any difference .NET Framework 1.1(two listings)

are still listed in Add/Remove Programs? Should I proceed with instructions

in id=320112 and then Step 3?

I'm trying to do this by giving the most information that I can and

proceeding with caution! I am not a computer novice but I am not a

professional as well.

Subject: Regarding the case SRX1039578213 from Microsoft

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Henry

and I am glad to work with you. To contact me, you may directly send emails

to my account: v-30henz@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID

SRX1039578213 in the subject line.

From the case log, I understand that the update KB928366 failed to install.

Windows Update states this is a 0 byte update. The system is Windows XP. If I

have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. We will work together

to resolve this specific issue through the course of the case.

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time,

let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility

============================================

1. Visit:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Save the file to your Desktop

3. Please double click the file msicuu2.exe on the Desktop to install this

tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1

========================

1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.

3. Restart the computer and see if the issue still exists.

For more information, please refer to:

-----------

Title: Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kben-us290301

However, if any problem is encountered when trying to uninstall .NET

Framework 1.1, we can also refer to the following Knowledge Base article to

uninstall it manually.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320112

After that, please restart the computer and perform the following

suggestions to reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and the updates for it.

Step 3: Install .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and .NET

Framework 1.1 SP1

=================================================================

1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable

Package and the updates from the following link and save them to the C drive

(C:\)

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/a/c/aac39226-8825-44ce-90e3-bf8203e74006/dotnetfx.exe

http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/b/4/8b4addd8-e957-4dea-bdb8-c4e00af5b94b/NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1

(KB928366)

2. When the File Download window appears, please click the Save button, and

follow the directions to save it to Windows. After downloading the Microsoft

..NET Framework 1.1 setup file onto your computer, please double-click the

..NET Framework files to manually install them one by one.

If an error is encountered when installing .NET Framework 1.1, we can also

refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to troubleshoot this

issue:

How to troubleshoot Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installation issues

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=824643

However, if the issue persists, please capture a screenshot when an error

message is encountered:

How to capture a Screenshot:

=======================

1. When the error appears, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on

your keyboard.

2. Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.

3. In Paint, click Paste under the Edit Menu, click Save under the File

menu, type a file name for the screenshot, choose JPEG as "Save as type",

click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click Save.

4. Please find the screenshot on the Desktop and send it as an attachment

to: v-30henz@mssupport.microsoft.com.

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the

email application being used. While you are composing the email, most

applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or Paper Clip

Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you

must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double

clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the "Attach" button.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please try the steps shown above and let me

know the results at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions or

concerns regarding this issue, please don't hesitate to tell me. It is my

pleasure to be of assistance.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Henry: Your response appreciated. No apology necessary. If nothing else I

am a very patient 'old' man!

Completed the 3rd step. While downloading Version 1 Service Pack 1

(KB928366) the Attach: window appeared. Tried 'Retry' several times to no

avail and then 'Ignore'. Completed download. Then restarted computer.

Shield is no longer in the tray! .NET Framework 1.1 [1.1.43227] again

listed in Windows Installer Clean Up list.

Question about 2 of Step 3:

"After downloading the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 setup file onto your

computer, please double-click the .NET Framework files to manually install

them one by one."

Is this step necessary? Now?

If necessary, where do I find the Redistributable Package Service Package

1 and Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 files to manually install them?

Please note ...... Microsoft Update shows no updates for my computer.

Reason to think download was a success. (?)

Extra help if it is al right. How do I delete the Microsoft Update, Review

Dear Dick,

Thanks for taking time to reply. First, I would like to apologize for your

support request being unexpectedly delayed during our internal transfer

process.

From your reply, I understand that step 1 and step 2 can be performed

without error. Also, .NET Framework 1.1 components still can be seen in Add

or Remove Programs.

Dick, thanks of your screenshot. I can fully understand the inconvenience

the issue caused. Also, thanks for your inquiry, the case status is open. On

my side, I will continue to do my best to help you.

First, I would like to explain that Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp

utility will not remove Add or Remove registry information, so we can see

..NET Framework in it. Please feel free about it, it is normal. Please

continue to do the step 3 to completed the installation of .NET Framework 1.1

components and test the issue on the Windows Update website. Your

understanding is highly appreciated.

If any other steps have been performed, I recommend perform all the 3 steps

again.

Thank you for your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please feel

free to let me know. I am glad to be of assistance.

I am looking forward to your reply.
