automatic update issues - installation

Recommended Posts

Hi, anybody have a problem, or better still, resolution for windows updater,

which, even though I have the security center (in XP home) set to "let me

download and choose when to install" option "on", automatically downloads and

installs updates regardless. I would like to save regular updates that aren't

on service pack 2 (i.e specific updates after and updates pertinent to my

hardware) because I reinstall windows about once/twice a year for a much

needed clean out and having those updates at hand would save a lot of time

and hassle.. Can anybody help with this problem or share a similar

experience.. (this problem may be posted somewhere else in these 500 +

pages, but on dial-up, this option's quicker..)

Proper maintenace would be easier than a complete wipe/install so often.

You want the updates? I'll get you started.

Quick tips:

- You can integrate MOST of the critical updates into your installation

media - so you don't have to download/install them ever again using that new

installation media.

- You should consider yourself an "IT Professional" in order to get these

updates - you'll understand as you grab them.

- There are many other ways of getting this than the few I list - learn to

properly utilize Google.

(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the

patches..)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given

month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##

with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month

abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches

for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by

the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be

fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..

None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-may.mspx

January 2007's patches..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-jan.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to

the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Here's some help - through April 2007...

(If presented with a choice - be an IT professional.)
