Guest Dave Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Why is it every time, and I mean every time, I go to Windows Update it comes back and tells me I have to install the 'Genuine Advantage Validation Tool" (aka MS Spyware) before I can update anything else. This 'Validation' piece of spyware has been installed on all my comps for some time. It shows clearly when updates are listed via the CP, or via the MS update website. Dave (aka disgusted)
Guest Engel Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Hello Dave, Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and a new Validation tool http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ I hope this post is helpful. Let us know how it works ºut. -- "Dave" wrote: > Why is it every time, and I mean every time, I go to Windows Update it comes > back and tells me I have to install the 'Genuine Advantage Validation Tool" > (aka MS Spyware) before I can update anything else. Guest Dave Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Thank you Engel for a very on-target reply - The WGA (whatever that means) test ran and I got 'Passed' on all 7 elements. (BTW, I'm on a modem connection, so these things happen slowly - actually one of the main drawbacks of constantly having to repeat the process every time I try to update my Windows.) Anyway, at the conclusion I had the option of validating either Windows or Office. I have both but chose Windows, at least for now. Thought it might go back and reoffer the Office option but it did not. A couple of questions if I might 1) Does this mean I was not validated before but am now? and 2) Can/should I rerun the whole thing just for the Office option? Thank you so much. Keep in mind I have no idea what's going on here, so your help is very much appreciated. Guest Engel Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Hi disgusted -) 1.- Is hard to ping point why the validation don't work the first time, maybe a glitch with the servers. Who knows. -) 2.- I don't think you are going to break anything if you try again. Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a Disk CleanUp. Good luck -- "Dave" wrote: > Thank you Engel for a very on-target reply - > > The WGA (whatever that means) test ran and I got 'Passed' on all 7 elements. > (BTW, I'm on a modem connection, so these things happen slowly - actually > one of the main drawbacks of constantly having to repeat the process every > time I try to update my Windows.) > > Anyway, at the conclusion I had the option of validating either Windows or > Office.
