Update failure

R, you're not sticking your nose in. I was just explaining why I thought Tea

Timer may be an issue. Call it thinking out loud. There has to be something

in common with all these posters as to why they are experiencing the same

problem, is it AV or is it some other program or similar that they have.

Any sort of real time protection has been known to cause problems.

Is this the update ?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=281fB2cd-c715-4f05-A01f-0455d2d9ebfb&displaylang=en

Have you tried a manual download and install or tried to locate the update

in the softwaredistribution/folder/downloads and install from there by double

clicking on it?

The manual install seems to work.

TamaraB, have you tried manually downloading and installing the update or

installing the update directly from the softwaredistribution/downloads

folder? Some have had a little success there.

BTW there is rarely anyone from MS monitoring this forum.

If you're running Vista, then you need to install the Framework manually. It

can be found here: -> C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Install

I had the same error message, and had no problems installing manually.

This isn't a solution per se but I uninstalled microsoft.NET Framework 1.1

from Control Panel \ Programs. If I ever need this in the future I can

always download it from MS downloads at a later date.

I ignored the update and the icon after a few hours was no longer on my

notification area. I checked to see if it still needed to be installed and

noticed it was installed around 12am with no errors.

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Installation date: ‎11/‎29/‎2007 12:01 AM

Installation status: Successful

So my best guess is to just ignore it (make sure the icon stays visible in

your notification area) and then check back later. If the icon has

disappeared chances are it installed. Check to make sure.

Same problem here. However go to:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install

after download and run the file

NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe

manually. Works fine.

I can empathise with your frustration Tamara - I'm unable to install no less

than 7 'important' and 'recommended' updates, and while I accept that this

board isn't monitored by MS agents, what I don't accept is not receiving the

promised reply within one business day for the help request I sent in on the

subject. I've now sent in another one, and will continue to do so every day

until I get some sort of response. From what i've read around various forums,

i'm not the only one whose help request has been met by MS with absolutely no

response.

Due to one of the updates I can't install being a hotfix without which many

games crash and others don't even load in the first place, I now have a

gaming PC which I can't play up-to-date games on. I don't want to buy a copy

of XP and replace Vista, but it's looking like i've got no other choice

unless I reconcile myself with being stuck with an overpowered internet

browsing and e-mailing machine!

I have never , been able to get this update to install, on my XP Pro 32 bit

system.

I try to install the udpate, get an error that I have to have Net Framework

1.1 SP1 udpate first.

I tried downloading the update to install, and get an error " unable to open

the file".

I hid this update for a long while, just tried it again yesterday with same

result.

Obviously, MS has had a major problem with this update for many, I am

somewhat suprised they never fixed it...

When I try that, I get the following message:

" This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package

exists, and you can access it, or contact the vendor to verify this is a

valid windows installer patch package".

tb,

I used your fix by going to the appropriate folder and used "Run as

Administrator", the update installed fine, but after rebooting the pesky

"Update is ready to be installed" icon was back in my systray. I clicked on

install, clicked on shutdown, turned the computer back on and voila, "Update"

apparently believes it has installed the update. While it does not show up

as an installed update, at least not yet, it does show up as a successful

install in "Update History".

Sure would be nice to know what caused the problem. Maybe some guru will

figure it out and let the rest of us know! :-)

I'm a bit "antsy" about deleting or renaming folders in my operating system,

and even more "antsy" about reloading my Vista OS, all to correct a problem

that was caused by Microsoft, i.e., this text at

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910336 - CAUSE - This problem occurs when

some files in the update are missing, even though the update is downloaded

and extracted successfully, when referring to receipt of an 80070002 error

code.

Surely there must be an easier method to "fix" this problem when an update

fails, maybe issuing the update with another name...

As you have already realized, I'm not "computer literate," but trying to

learn.

I tried this and it worked!!!!!! Yeah! For some reason my path, however, was

c:\Windows\SotfwareDistribution\Download\Install

Also, even if you are in your admin account run it as an administrator by

right-clicking on the .exe file.

Thanks brittybabe69!!!!

James, I too am not an expert but some folders get recreated every time

Windows starts up. By renaming a folder you can always put it back in place

if the 'solution' didn't work.

It is now quite clear that MS didn't test this update very carefully. I

rather doubt anyone from MS will admit releasing a faulty update.

It seems strange that the file that is downloaded to the download folder is

dated 1 Sep 2004. I found lots of info regarding KB867460 on Google, all

dated in 2004. All of this is way before Vista.

And .NET Framework 1.1 - isn't that for XP? Isn't Vista running 3.0? Is it

possible that the Update service is delivering a wrong and old file that was

never meant for Vista?

Sorry, I don't know much about this, but is seems strange that the update is

much older than Vista itself.

The .NET 1.1 SP1 failed to install on my laptop yesterday with the same error

message (8007002). So I turned on my desktop late last night to see if the

same problem exists there. However, this update did not show up. I tried it

again today on the desktop but the only available update is for the Window

Defender released today (KB915597). It seems to me that MS pulled the .NET

update due to the massive installation failure. I also rember that the update

message on the laptop said that the reason for the failure is something like

"not needed". I will just ignore the .NET update for now. May be MS

accidentally released an unfinished update.

I followed brittybabe69's suggestion later in this post (ie run the updater

file from its folder) and it worked fine for me. The update now appears in

the update history list, but not in the installed updates list.

I have also had responses from Microsoft. The first did not understand my

problem (my fault, no doubt, for not being clear enough) and told me how to

re-install .NET Framework the second has advised me to repair Windows Vista

with the original DVD. Now, the manufacturer of my machine neglected to give

me a copy of the DVD, so I will have to get it from them but I'm concerned

that the second response from Microsoft identified the error code I was

getting as 80070005 NOT 80070002. I'm not clear whether this was a typo or a

misunderstanding, so I am checking with Microsoft.

I am happy to post the advice from Microsoft if anyone wants it, but it

might be better to wait.

One final piece: my son, who runs XP received notice of the same update and

had no trouble installing it.

Cheers
