Error Code: 0x80242006

Hi,

I am setting up a new PC with Win XP SP2. I went to windows update and

downloaded the genuine windows tool, and Windows Installer 3.1 as it does for

the 1st time. That completed successfully.

I then told it to look for more updates. It found 82 updates, downloaded

them, but fails when trying to install them. The error code is in the

subject line above.

I found a couple of articles related to the Windows Installer 3.1 v2 and

downloaded and installed it just fine, but these updates continue to fail.

I guess I could download them individually, but was trying to avoid that

much work. Any advice?

Thanks,

Mike

0x80242006 = The caller passed an update with invalid metadata to the

handler

If this is XP 32 bit [i86], then download and SAVE the latest version of

the Windows Update Agent:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Then download and SAVE KB927891:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A&displaylang=en

Now go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Using Windows Explorer [start, All Programs, Accessories, Windows

Explorer] navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

Delete ALL subfolders of SoftwareDistribution

Close Windows Explorer

Go back to Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv

Click OK

Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Then install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe and restart the system

After the system restarts go back to Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow

Click OK

OR, initiate a manual visit to the Windows Update site by clicking the

Windows Update icon on the Start Menu or from within Internet Explorer

by clicking Tools, Windows Update on the Menu bar.

STRONGLY advise against installing more than 5 updates at a time just in

case one of them is problematic.

MowGreen,

I tried all of these things and none seemed to work. I'm going to reformat

and reinstall and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the response!

Engel,

I tried these things and it didn't work. I'm not sure what's wrong, but I

appreciate your help. I'm going to reformat and reinstall and see if it goes

away.

Thanks,
