System Restore seems to be corrupted. Can't install any applicatio

I am having trouble with my Toshiba Notebook with Vista Home Premium. The

problem seems to be with the System Protection (System Restore) feature.

Any time I try to install something it hangs up when it attempts to

generated a system restore point.

If I go into the system protection tab, Everything is disabled (Greyed out)

and under availabe disc it just says searching.

I've done alot of searching on the internet and have found a few similar

problems but not my exact problem.

Most talk about going into the System Protection Tab and unchecking the

drive. Of course that won't work for me as I can't see any drives it just

says searching.

I found one article about checking some registry entries and Group security

policies concerning System Restore. Those entries did not exists in my

registry.

I have 81 gig free so I don't think thats the issue.

I have done a few other things that I found that were similar to my problem

including:

Renaming the Software Distribution folder.

doing a Clean boot (disabled all startup programs and services)

clear proxy cache

rename the system32/catroot2 directory

rename the security/*.log files

Nothing has helped.

Can anyone point me to a way to reset the System protection function without

doing it through the system interface? Are there some registry entries (other

than the group policy stuff) I can look at. I think the problem all stems

from it not showing any drives in the available disk section. Any thoughts on

how I can force my drive back in there. Or disable system restore via

registry entries. My machine is 100% functional right now, but I can not

install any software at all.

Thanks for any help or guidance with this issue!

RE: System Restore seems to be corrupted. Can't install any applic

I believe I read every page of his site at least twice at this point.

I am further along with my problem now. I left the system properties->system

protection tab open overnight last night and this morning it finally did show

my drive with a checkbox on it instead of searching....

I unchecked the box next to my drive, it popped up a window that ask if I

want to turn system restore off, I answered yes. Its now sitting back on the

system protection tab with an hour glass. Hopefully not for another 8 hours.

So now I guess my question because what would cause it to take that long to

display the drives that are setup with system restore?

At this point if I am able to turn it off and install programs I will be

happy. But would like to know what the core issue is if possible.

So for now I'm just waiting to see if turning it off suceeds at some point.

Final update...

After leaving the System Protection Properties tab up all night it finally

showed my drive in the available disk section with a check mark. I turned it

off. After 5 hours the screen finally close.

AND I AM NOW ABLE TO INSTALL PROGRAMS!!! Happy Happy Day. Don't know whats

wrong with system restore. I don't know if turning it back on now would reset

it and all would be fine or if there is a problem. But right now I need to

get back to getting this machine setup and configured.
