Guest Shaw Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 My laptop runs Vista Home Premium, I installed a windows update yesterday and now my DVD drive no longer works. I checked my device manager and the DVD drive is no longer there. I tried to restore my computer and it crashed. I was unable to restart correctly until I set it to restore to an even earlier restore point. Even then it still didn't solve the problem with my DVD drive.

Guest Shaw Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 I tried it and it didn't work. The problem I have isn't the same as the description of that fix. It's not that the drive is no longer enabled/broken, it doesn't show up in device manager, it simply disappeared. Guest Peter Foldes Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Shaw Are you sure you fixed the Upper and Lower filter settings in the Registry as it is described on that MS-KB that I posted for you I don't know what to tell you then. Removing the Upper and Lower filters usually fixes this issue for most. It works for others with the same exact issue. Anyway maybe someone will come along and have a better idea. -- Peter Please Reply to Newsgroup for the benefit of others Requests for assistance by email can not and will not be acknowledged. Guest Jim Byrd Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Hi Shaw - Peter is correct - this is the normal fix for this problem: See here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb[LN]270008 It may not sound like it applies but take the steps outlined there to delete the Upper and Lower Filters. You can also use this reg file to handle these deletes (it takes care of deleting some other things which can cause problems as well): http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip This is pretty much the "standard" fix for this type of issue. Backup first so that you can recover if there are problems (there aren't usually, BTW). It's recommended by Compaq/HP that you run FilterFixer also when this occurs to recreate the correct entries, here: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp27501-28000/sp27949.exe Instructions here: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp27501-28000/sp27949.txt -- Regards, Jim Byrd, My Blog, Defending Your Machine, http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ In news:3448A316-1351-475E-A906-DB25542316E5@microsoft.com, Shaw <Shaw@discussions.microsoft.com> typed: || I tried it and it didn't work. Guest realcestmoi Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Hello Shaw, you might trie this: This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been uninstalled. They add references in the Registry for modules which they use, and these references fail to be removed, leaving Windows unable to find the files apparently needed for CD devices at the next boot. There is a simple Registry patch to correct this (download it aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip. Before using the patch, be sure to back up the Registry. After using the patch and rebooting, the drives should reappear. Any third party package that is still required will then need to be re-installed. This problem also may arise if there is underlying trouble with the Input-Output system of the machine: for example, interactions with controllers like Promise or Highpoint, or with special drivers. It may be worth trying a change in the DMA settings for the device in Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager. Under IDE controllers, double click on the Primary or Secondary IDE Channel concerned, then click the tab for the Advanced Settings page. Guest dasiygmj Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 click "start", then highlight My Computor right click on it, select "manage" then click on "Device Manager", on the right a window appears showing you all things attached to your computor. Click on "DVD/CD drive" + sign to drop down and see the very one that is installed in your computor. Now, right click, select "update driver". Windows will automatically bring up the wizard select the one that will download from the internet. Follow the prompts and you should be back in business. PS: Please reupdate all updates prior to doing this so that the proper drivers are restored and the computors registery reads Windows XP SP2. Let me know how it goes.
