Guest dorothy Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I choose update and get the list. I choose to download. It starts to download then a window pops up that says updates failed to download. I tried turning off the firewall but that did not make any difference. I have XP home, SP2, a dial-up connection to internet which means the downloads should take hours so I know nothing has come in. I upgraded to XP about 6 mos ago and have never been able to download any security updates. At first a few did start but were incomplete. I have 512 MB RAM so that should not be a problem.

Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 wintrust.dll Click OK Try WU again If still no joy, then on the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update (red mark) and see if there is an error code. Guest dorothy Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I cleared the TIC did the start/run thing, tried WU. It says there is no history of downloads, nothing. Still says I need to upgrade WU components and choosing that option and dwnld gives me nothing, no error. I clicked on the details for the download. that says 0 KB, 0 min, ready to install. I remember I might have downloaded that once and then decided not to install it after I read what it was. I have looked for a file that might be that but didn't find anything. Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Click Stop. Stopping the service will take a moment. Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK. b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename. c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder. Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type services.msc. Click OK. Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Click Start. Starting the service will take a moment. You'll lose the history but as you haven't got one it's irrelevant. Guest dorothy Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Still nothing. I did all that. Following the MS "problem solution" I was able to delete all the .dll files, but did not find the .exe files. Tried the relead anyway. Something downloaded. I ran install which seemed to run but left a message that it wasn't needed as I already had the program. I remembered now that shield icon with what might be a ! on my tool bar. It used to want to install an update. I clicked on that - no window now but something seems to be downloading - very slowly. After 2hrs, only 3% show when I point to the icon. I didn't loose the 3% when the connection timed out and redialed, but at that rate I am not hopeful. Shortly after that a window popped up that said downloads were ready so I clicked install. Wasn't long before I got a notice that "some had failed to install". from the list it must have been all of them. So when I click on the icon now it still wants to install 74 downloads. I also ran the Dell XP diagnostic tool and the only problem it found with security was that there were no updates. Guest TaurArian Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Okay Dorothy, did you have an error similar to Harvey's This is some feedback I got from him "2007-05-31 08:04:34:945 3428 eb4 AUClnt FATAL: Error: 0x80004002. wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server in the WindowsUpdate.log. So I checked Services, and found that COM+ Event System was started but COM+ System Application was not started. So I started the latter one and changed it to Automatic. Then my Windows Updates (from the WSUS server) all installed (58 of them!). Hurray! Sorry I didn't report the Event Viewer errors to you earlier. I can't be 100% sure of which action fixed my problem, but I sure appreciate your help. Somewhere along the way I think I did get them to download. But they won't install. I get a message that "some updates failed to install". No specific error . If you opened a cmd window it would stay open and allow you to enter any command, including the ones she gave you. I went through a couple of people at PC safety, got transferred to the tech dept. the second person there said it was a dll problem. He sent me a file to download and run. That fixed it. Its possible to download updates from Windows Update Service but it is impossible to have the file installed on my computer. And i have in my upload.log exactly the same message as yours. Same code error 0x80004002 and the same text in the update log. No doubt. So i went as you recommanded it on xpuptool.notlong.com (Semmes to be Orbitfiles now). and i found a file named update.bat conceived by Sasidev. There is nos precise indication of what this file does exactly. Is that the one you used for your computer ? Furthermore, even if i think it is the case, do you think this program will fit french options of Windows.
