Guest biblio1542 Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I have an XP Home system (Dell Inspiron B130 laptop), SP2 fully patched through last month.I ran the July patches last night (went to Microsoft Update and selected Express). According to MS, the only updates I needed were the Malware Removal Tool (KB 890830), the .Net Framework (KB928366), and an XP update (KB 936357). I also ran the Root Certificate update. All seemed to install without difficulty. I did the reboot requested. Logged back in Microsoft Update which showed all patches successfully installed (confirmed under Add/Remove Programs). I turned the system off. This morning after working with the system, I tried to put the machine into Standy, only to get the following message: Service .Net Framework v 1.1.4322 Update is preventing the machine from entering standby. try stopping this service and try again. Thinking that perhaps the issue was that the patching had been done under my admin profile, while Internet browsing this morn had been under my normal user profile, and that I had not tried entering standby as an admin, I shut down and rebooted under my admin profile. Trying to Standby, I received the same message. I welcome any suggestions as to how I might fix this problem. Sincerely

Let me first preface my reply with the following caution: since the days when I was connecting via dial-up and would get up to *5* notices from my antivirus program that it had intercepted attempted viral attacks *while* logging onto the server (before I had even authenticated onto the network), I do NOT get on line without antiviral protection. If necessary, I will download the program/patch, disconnect from the network, disable AV, run the install, reenable AV, and, only then, reconnect. Having said that, I am now completely confused. According to both the Microsoft Update website and add/remove programs, the .net framework v1.1 patch installed successfully. You are saying that my AV program (which is Antivir) will have prevented that. So, if I cannot believe the Microsoft Update website/add-remove programs to correctly report my status, which files/file versions-dates should I check to be sure, once I have uninstalled/reinstalled the patch that it is, indeed, updated? Where do I go to manually download the patch for installation later? The real state of my 'updatedness' is now my current issue. For some mysterious reason (the Update Gods?), standby capability returned yesterday, for both my admin and normal user profiles. The only activities I engaged in yesterday were browsing, use of Excel, and insertion of my USB flash drive to copy files off the laptop. If one of these acts restored standby capability, I am at a loss to account for how. Guest krisbke Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Hi Biblio, I had a similar problem and you have no need to worry. As far as I understand it, the update is already on your computer, but it hasn't been allowed to finish installing by Avira Antivir. You don't need to go online for anything - remove your internet connection, follow the instructions and everything should go smoothly. That worked for me and I was never online unguarded at any point. Hope that helps and good luck! Let's skip to the crux of the matter ... make sure that the Net Framework v1.1.4322 update Service is no longer listed in Services in the System Configuration Utility. If it is not, then perhaps AntiVir has included a fix in their latest update. Since the system is no longer having a Standby issue, then that is a possibility. At this point it would be best to confirm that the update has installed: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-040.mspx Under 'Update Information' click the plus sign next to Security Update Deployment Click the plus sign next to Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Check the ' Registry Key Verification ' information and compare it to your system Below that is 'File Information ' Compare the file versions of the specific KB that was installed against the ones on the system. If you need to redownload the update, the above Security bulletin page has links to the MS Download Center for the KB that is needed.
