Guest lbp1126 Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 After trying a number of the suggested fixes when Vista failed to install updates and gave me error message 80073712 I came up with a procedure, modified from other's suggestions, that worked. 1. Go to http://www.gibinsoft.net/ and download the GIPO@Utilities Files 2. Run GiPo@moveonboot and tell it to rename c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml to c:\windows\winsxs\pending.bak 3. Follow instructions to Reboot the System. When you do you will get a message on reboot that some system component or functions may not have connected or a similar message . Just ignore those messages and go to Internet Explorer and type in http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/windowsupdateagent30-86.exe and when prompted, tell it to run the file. This will manually install windows update agent. Answer yes when prompted if you want to install this and ultimately it will tell you to reboot once more. 4. When you reboot it will probably say it is reconfiguring updates. When done go to IE Tools and click on update and it should install all of the back updates. Then reboot once more - hold your breath while it goes through the familiar Reconfiguring Updates Message and eventuallythey will all be installed (I had 20) and the problem will be solved! Hope this works on your computer. Best of Luck.

Guest abbottx4 Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 lbp: When I go to the link for the update agent, I get the infamous "Page Cannot Be Found" message. Is your link wrong? Guest kearnemj Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 i have noticed several others, as well as myself, who do not even have the pending.xml file in the winsxs folder at all. does anyone know of a solution for this? I am beginning to think the only fix is to reinstall windows. Guest Budilike Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I too do not have this file on a brand new computer pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium. Guest adonai.andrade Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Solution to 80073712. I have set my user as owner of c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml, gave modify permission also. Edited c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml, cleanup all information (off course i hade mad a backup first). After this i have opened windows update and check for new updates.
Guest Mohit Kapoor Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Some steps you can try and I am sure it will resolve the issue. 1.From admin command prompt type net stop wuauserv and net stop cryptsvc and then delete the softwaredistribution and catroot2 folder under c:\windows and c:\windows\system32 respectively. 2.Look for these files under c:\windows\winsxs Pending.xml and Pending.grl Take the ownership of these files and delete them. Along with this also check if you have these values under registry • PendingXmldentifier • NextQueueEntryIndex • AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving in the location HKLM/Components If present delete them as well. 3.Run from admin command prompt reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty Restart the computer and try updating again. If issue still remains try these 1.Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe from http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe save to the desktop, and run from an elevated command prompt, adding /wuforce to the end of the command 2.Uninstall any antivirus or firewall software. 3.try running sfc scan in the WinRE ( sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windows ) All the Best!!
