When attempting to use windows update and also randomly I receive a message

stating that Wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. It

shows an error code of 0x800706BE.

I've downloaded this version of windows update and had to force it to run

with no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks

Windows version? Had you just reinstalled Windows? Is NAV installed? Was

it ever installed?

I'm using XP Pro SP2. No I've been using this version of Windows for some

time with no problems. I did have NAV on about six months ago but was having

trouble with it and took it off and the system was working fine afterwards.

Read the thread and the Remote Procedure Call is started as are the BITS and

Windows Installer.

Are you referring to Windows Update Agent 3.0 (v7.0.6000.374

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494)?

Is "Update for Windows XP (KB927891)" listed in Add/Remove Programs (make

sure Show Updates is checked)?

When was the last time Windows Update worked?

Is Windows Defender installed and are its definitions current? [Just asking,

not a recommendation or suggestion to install it.]

Have you run the Norton Removal Tool?

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

What anti-virus application are you using now? Is your subscription current

and are its definitions updated daily & automatically? Can you manually

update definitions successfully?

Good day:

Yes the Windows Update Agent 3.0 is the update I was referring to.

Update for Windows xp (KB927891) IS listed in the add/remove.

It looks like the last Windows update was on 6/13/07, this is the last one

in the add/remove program.

I've used Windows Defender previously but it is not current. Currently I'm

using AVG free edition. I haven't noticed that it was hanging up but when I

tried to manually update I gives me the following Update was unsuccessful.

Can not initialize the update interface. Installation of AVG Free Edition is

probably damaged. Please reinstall.

Yes I used the Norton's Removal tool, but I'll run it again to insure that

it's removed.

Given your last reply, I'd recommend running a /thorough/ check for

hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,

http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,

http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,

http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for expert

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
