Guest sira100 Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Vista Home Premium - Can anyone work out why when i go to control panel and try the windows update, check for updates button - then install updates - my windows modules installer crashes and stops working. First of all how do i identify the program that possibly may be helping crash the modules installer and secondly i heard there is an update to stop this from happening from the vista ms site but i cant download the update anyway as the service host updater is not working when windows modules installer crashes each time. It wont allow me to update the computer and i need my important vista updates. Sometimes i can download a few but then on shutdown of the PC it seems to say installing updates but never completes due to this windows installer not working - next day i find my PC still not switched off so have to turn off PC unsafely. I have an AMD athlon 64 processor 4000+ 2.76GHz 1 Gig RAM 32 bit , 4.3 WEI, using Vista home premium OEM software. Please help me as i am now running around in circles trying to figure out the issue. Does PowerDVD, or Peer Guardian 2 affect the modules installer? Thank you. _____ Hi, I would try uninstalling Peer Guardian 2, as well as making sure it has not disabled the BITS service. If it still does not work, try running the default .reg file on this site to reset your services back to default. ______ Hi, Tried that. Uninstalled the Peer Guardian.. checked that BITS is enabled (yes it is) , restarted computer to check - still not working on the updates. Went to do the default .reg file on the site and tried this - then did a reboot - NO luck except that when i tried to do a shutdown with update - 2 files were appearing to update...but after 20mins it was still shutting down with 1st update not done. This is when i knew the modules installer was not allowing it to do complete the task as it was down. What next? can you think of anything else? Thanks again. Sira100. ________ So the updates do download? It is just on shutdown that they fail? ________ Well it seems to be that the update is there for one of them - i have multiple other updates sitting in windows update still but when i shutdown only 2 of them are available to update ( i presume this update may be what i need for modules installer to work - i hope!) but even this doesnt update as on shutdown it tries but sits on update 1 as if it is neverending.. I use kaspersky anti-virus 6.0 (could there be a possibility this may be the cause?) _______ PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!!

Possibly. Checking their forums doesn't show any threads related to issues with Windows Updates and KAV 6. Suggest you register and then post there and see if KAV is causing the WindowsModulesInstaller crash: http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?s=18e19b13c7335f294ff237412fb11b03&showforum=4 AFAIK, the only way to obtain the latest windows modules installer for Vista is via Windows Update. See if this helps shed any light on the issue: How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228 > The CBS.log file is located in the %windir%\Logs\CBS folder. > > Note The Windows Modules Installer service also writes to this log file. > (The Windows Modules Installer service installs optional features, updates, and service > packs.) Check the CBS.log for any relevant info.
