THE source for how to trouble shoot SP2 installations:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

Check the log files, %windir%\Svcpack.log and %windir%\setupapi.log .

Just to add:

Error message that you receive when you try to update a Windows XP-based computer to

Windows XP Service Pack 2 by visiting the Windows Update Web site: "Unable to read from or

write to database"

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915169
