I did a repair install of XP Home-SP2 on a Dell Dimension. Now it wants to

install 76 updates, but the updates fail. What do I do?

First step is to stop the Automatic Updates service via the Services

console or from Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK or press Enter

[NOTE: Do NOT Disable the AU service, just stop it for now and leave it

set to start Automatically on boot]

With show hidden files, folders, and system files enabled,

delete all of the *subfolders* of WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

Then close the window

Download and save:

Windows Update Agent 3.0

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

KB927891:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

Install WUA first, then KB927891, and restart the system

To start the automatic download of updates go back to Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow

Click OK or press Enter

Or, just initiate a manual visit to Windows Update via the Start Menu

link or from within IE
