Guest Bachboy Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I upgraded a Windows 2000 box to Windows XP SP2. After the upgrade I ran windows update. Downloaded a ton of critical updates. However when they attempt to load it stops and advises that "some updates could not be installed" I tried installing fewer updates, but no luck. The only things that loaded from the update site were Windows Geniune Advantage Validation tool, Windows Installer 3.1 (kb893803) and Update for Windows (KB898641). No other updates will load. Any ideas? Thanks
Guest TaurArian [MS-MVP] Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Need more information - How to view the Update log in Windows:- Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log and then click OK. Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the Newsgroup. Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update. This may provide further clues as to why the update failed. Guest bachboy Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Here's what fixed it for me: a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, press ENTER after each command, and then click OK every time that you receive a verification message: regsvr32 wuapi.dll regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll regsvr32 wuaueng.dll regsvr32 wucltui.dll regsvr32 wups2.dll regsvr32 wups.dll regsvr32 wuweb.dll I only did the above I did not have to do other steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910359. I did not get the stop messages, just the symptoms "TaurArian [MS-MVP]" wrote: > Need more information - > > How to view the Update log in Windows:- > > Click Start, and then click Run. > In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log > and then click OK. > > Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) > associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. Guest uvmd Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 bachboy - You are my savior! I had a similar problem to yours when I had to do a repair reinstall of XP after some .dll files got corrupted. I couldn't install any of the Windows Updates, but they downloaded fine. I did what you said worked, and my updates are installing as we speak. Thanks again! uvmd "bachboy" wrote: > Here's what fixed it for me: > a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. > b. Guest Jensen01 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 This worked for me. I dont know how, because the first 10 updates worked the rest failed, then I had to restart the computer. I started the updates again and its working so far only 12 left. Considering I started with 82 updates waiting. Thanks "bachboy" wrote: > Here's what fixed it for me: > a. Guest lindzog Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Bachboy I found this page when researching the same problem. I repaired my OS and Updates would download but not Install. I just tried your tip and as I write my Updates are installing. Big thanks from me My Repair didnt speed up my System as I would have liked and I may still have to do a clean install. But for now I appear to be at least heading for everything working ok again, so Im grateful. lindzog "bachboy" wrote: > Here's what fixed it for me: > a.
