Check to see if KB927779 is listed under Windows XP - Software updates

If it is, uninstall it [make sure the 'Show updates' box is checked]

Uninstall MDAC 2.8 SP1 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel

Restart the system even if not prompted to

Download and SAVE:

MDAC 2.8 SP1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=78cac895-efc2-4f8e-a9e0-3a1afbd5922e&DisplayLang=en

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6B0CDB65-AEF4-489F-B917-812D9F7687BD&displaylang=en

Install MDAC 2.8 SP1 first, restart if prompted to, then install KB927779

*STRONGLY SUGGEST completely disabling the installed antivirus* from

monitoring the system while installing both MDAC 2.8 SP1 and KB927779.

Re: windows update kb927779 always reoffers to install even alread

Please see this: Component Checker: Diagnose problems and reconfigure

MDAC installations

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307255

IF MDAC has an 'issue' and 2.8 SP1 came with the OS, then to repair it

you would need to run sfc /scannow

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker

(Sfc.exe)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

You are prompted to insert a Windows XP SP2 CD when you try to run the

System File Checker tool on a Windows XP SP2-based computer

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900910

That will work if you have an XP CD that also includes SP2.

OR, if SP2 was not on the original XP CD and was installed afterwards,

then instead of the inserting a CD when prompted to, Browse to SP2's

location

WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

Re: windows update kb927779 always reoffers to install even alread

I have download the Component Checker and run it:

I choose the 1st option-automatically detect the released version--it promt

" Unknown"

Then, I choose the 2nd option-- and select " MDAC 2.8 SP1 On windows XP SP2"

I found that-- at COM details, all the " HKEY_CLasses_rootclsid" were

mismatch"

Then I run System File Checker tool on a Windows XP SP2-based computer by

Insert the CD XP SP2.

Restart and run Component Checker again,still same, "

HKEY_CLasses_rootclsid" were mismatch"

And try to install the KB927779,still prompt success but it still show need

to update?

Pls kindly advise.

Re: windows update kb927779 always reoffers to install even alread

If you're comfortable poking around in the registry, then we can give

this a shot. Otherwise, I don't see how you can repair MDAC without

uninstalling and reinstalling SP2. SP2 is what installed MDAC 2.8 SP1.

We'll just *check* the registry and not make any changes yet, OK ?

** Please make notes on your findings **

Go to Start > Run > type in

regedit

Click OK

Now click Edit on the Menu Bar at top, then click Find

Under 'Look at', make sure that Keys, Values, and Data are checked.

There's no need to check the bottom box next to 'Match whole string only'

Copy and paste this into the 'Find what: ' line

MDACVer.Version

Click the 'Find Next' button

The first instance of it should be in a folder with a CLSID of

{54AF9350-1923-11D3-9CA4-00C04F72C514}

A subfolder of the above, named ProgId should be open

In the right frame, under Data, it should show MDACVer.Version

*Click* on each subfolder under {54AF9350-1923-11D3-9CA4-00C04F72C514}

The first subfolder InProcServer32 should show in the right frame under

Name, Default, under Data, D:\WINDOWS\system32\odbcconf.dll

For 'ThreadingModel' Name is Default, the Data should show 'Apartment'

InstalledVersion - Name: Default Data: 2,81,1117,0

ProgId - Name: Default Data: MDACVer.Version.2.81

Pogrammable - Name: Default Data: (value not set)

TypeLib - Name: Default Data: {54AF9343-1923-11D3-9CA4-00C04F72C514}

Version - Name: Default Data: 2,81,1117,0

VersionIndependentProgId - Name: Default Data: MDACVer.Version

After checking the above, press the F3 key at the top of the keyboard.

[ That's the same as clicking Edit, Find Next ]

The CurVer subfolder of the MDACVer.Version folder should now be open.

In the right frame, for Name it should show Default, for Data it should

show MDACVer.Version.2.81

Now click the CLSID subfolder right *above* the CurVer subfolder

The right frame should show:

Name - Default Data - {54AF9350-1923-11D3-9CA4-00C04F72C514}

Click the PLUS sign next to the folder right *under* MDACVer.Version,

MDACVer.Version.2.81

Then click on the CLSID subfolder

It should show Name - Default and Data -

{54AF9350-1923-11D3-9CA4-00C04F72C514}

Close the Registry editor.

Please post back with your findings, solution.

Re: windows update kb927779 always reoffers to install even alread
