Windows update failure

I am unable to download any updates let alone try to install them. There are

no error messages. At first I was unable to even download the updating

software but after turning off the Spybot Tea Timer I was at least able to

get that done. This is on a XP Home machine. Kinda stumped here. Any ideas?

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update (red mark)

and see if there is an error code.

If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a search

for the error code.

and/or

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log

and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)

associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and

paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other

hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the

Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie

KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.

This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

If I am reading this right I see several references to error code 0x80200011.

I also see a few references to a warning that states " Download job failed

because of insufficient range support". Any ideas?

From what I gather IMHO what your computer asked for and what the server was giving you

were two different things hence error. That's my interpretation.

Clear out Temporary Internet Files including offline stuff etc. That'll clear the cache.

Then rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (fixes many problems)

Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Click Stop.

Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:

a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.

b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.

c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

Click OK.

Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

Click Start.

Starting the service will take a moment.

Reboot and return to WU to see if that helps.

You'll lose the history of WU but that's not important. At least it will clear the cache.

I cleared the TIF's. But renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder was not

allowed. It said "Cannot rename SoftwareDistribution: Access is denied. Make

sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not

currently in use. Still unable to get it to work.

Did you stop the WU service before trying to rename the softwaredistribution

folder?

Here is a major problem I encountered this evening. I turned on the computer,

got online with my wireless card, did an update with Norton and noticed that

it was having trouble connecting to the server. It finally connected and took

at least 10 minutes to finish. My Webroot spysweeper could not connect for

updates and Internet Explorer would not go to any page. I rebooted and got

the same result. I turned off the firewall with the same results. At that

point I tried to do a system restore and my computer refused to do it. And

then it hit me. I swapped the .old on my Software Distribution folders so the

original was recognized, rebooted the computer and all of my software now

works the way it did originally. The original has 60mb of data in it and the

new one only half as much. Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds like I

would have to reinstall most of my software to the new folder just so

everything works. Now to answer your question. Yes, I followed the link and

it did install. But obviously I still have the same update issues with WU.

Interesting Steve, as I have renamed that folder many times without incident. The download

folder usually clears in about 10 days automatically.

It's only for WU.

Have you opened a support incident yet?

It will be interesting to find out what MS have to say about this.

The windows update for .Net Framework has created considerable

problems for a lot of users. Those that have contacted Microsoft prior

to July 12 or July 13 were given bad information on how to fix the

update. First, a bit of history: The update is for .Net Framework 1.1

service pack 1, not the original installation of .Net Framework 1. The

service pack was an optional update that many users did not upload.

Hence the latest security update was doomed to fail. The security

update did not search for the right version prior to installation so

either you got a installation failure message or it "updated

sucessfully" only to reappear as a needed update a few minutes later.

If you were unfortunate enough to add .Net Framework version 2 or 3

without uploading your service pack to version 1 your headaches just

got worse. (Please note: there is a service pack out for version 2 and

the service pack for version 3 will be released this fall).

The fix advocated by level one support was to reset the update catalog

by clearing the software distribution folder and reseting the catroot2

folder. Of course you had to go stop a few services in order to rename

the folder so the process seemed a bit complicated but if you took

that route you were on a fools errand. (Level one support has since

been re-educated). Downloading the files directly off the web site did

not resolve the issue either, unless you got lucky and added service

pack 1 during the process and did not have version 2 or 3 on your

computer.

So, here is the fix:

Get rid of all the .Net Framework files and reinstall them one by one,

updating each one as you go.

You need Windows Install Clean Up utitility to clear the installer

files, then you need the dotnetfix clean up utility to get rid of all

of the versions of .Net Framework, then you need to upload and install

each version of Framework, including the service packs, one by one

until you are done, then do the updates. If you only need version 1.1,

then there is no reason to download version 2 and 3 along with their

numerous updates.

For those few are foiled at the first step: that is you run the

Windows Install Cleanup utility and you do not find any .Net Framework

files listed, then you need to download the 1.1 package and install

it. That simply places it in the windows installer cache so it shows

up in the utility so you can then turn right around and delete it.

Here are the crib notes provided to the Microsoft support staff:

Download Windows Install Cleanup Utility by following the article

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 and remove any other versions

of .Net framework showing up in cleanup utility.

Also download the Net Framework cleanup tool from

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx and you

can download the tool from the left side of the page under the section

"USEFUL TOOLS".

go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and do the updates kb928366..

Good luck to all and please spread the word, Microsoft Support is

overwhelmed atm.

BTW: The windowsupdate.log and all of the usual stuff has no useful

information for this problem, this little update snafu was a doozy!

There is more to the story but enough said for now.
