I got notified of 3 updates by MS KB951748, KB951978, and the MRT monthly.

I faithfully downloaded and installed all 3. After reboot, I could not get

back onto the Web. Since KB951748, KB951978 are both IE security updates, I

uninstalled them both, re-booted and was graciously let back on the Web. Of

course MS wanted me to intall them, so sent another gold shield to let me

know. Instead of re-installing both, I first re-installed KB951978,

re-booted, and still got back on the Web, but when I re-installed KB951748,

again, neither my FireFox 3 or IE 7 could browse, so uninstalled KB951748.

Do anyone think MS will fix that "fix" to actually allow use of IE? Or what

settings must I fiddle with to make my sytems work with the KB951748?

The same thing happened identically on 2 XP Pro SP3 systems, and I followed

the same install - uninstall procedure of the security updates. They both

work withOUT the KB951748 uninstalled.

Thanks,

John

Hi IT Lite

Same problem here. Are you running Zone Alarm. If so turn it off and you can

access the internet with all updates installed.

in the meantime we await microsoft to fix the problem.

Hi IT Lite again

Thanks. I also have just uninstalled KB951748 following your advice and

everything is back to normal. I do have the warning shield to warn me not to

download this update again.

Shame I reinstalled Zone Alarm as I now have to reset all my programs for

access.

A few weeks back I got caught with the windows defender rogue update. What

has happened to Microsoft QC and their testing of updates.

How does the average user recover from this one if they lose internet

access? How do they download the fix when MS find one?

I wonder if MS appreciate the severity of the problem they have created.

Thank goodness this forum exists so a thankyou to MS for setting this up.

time for a malt whisky methinks to calm the nerves.

many thanks

Because if you use the native built in firewall there's no issues.

Every month I can point to tons of issues when third party firewall

programs are used.

Maybe they just don't have consumer grade testers and focus on the core

native stuff of the OS.

The average user really should not use Zone Alarm.

Good point re Zone Alarm. However not everyone with the internet access

problem has mentioned they have zone alarm so the link is not proven yet.

I would also add that many computer users who buy the odd computer magazine

may not be technically advanced but will install the free zone alarm that

comes on the disc because the mags state how much better than the windows

firewall it is. It is this category of users that could well be dumped in

no-mans land.

I only chanced upon this forum when defender update let me down a few weeks

back and that is definitely a native windows program. Who else will think to

look here and how many will know this forum exists

Lets see what happens with Microsoft and Zone Labs. Who will issue a patch

first?

Macc_eye,

I would much rather keep the update uninstalled than kill my Zone Alarm I

am on an adsl hot whenever booted up. My ZA is also my anti-virus and

spyware killer.

Don't agree- the average user is better off using Zone Alarm then any other

firewall available.

Your opinion is no better than anyone else's including mine.

Hi Susan,

When the new AV apps are updated daily or more, I would not trust the MS

firewall. Even with a firewall on my dsl modem [hardware firewall],

Zonealarm Suite, and keeping an eye on program activity, etc., one of my XP

Pro systems got bit by the Worm.Win32.Huhk.c, which infects explorer.exe.

Even after updating from Sp2 to Sp 3, which changes the actual explorer.exe

file, it is still infected. ZA quarantines it, but has no way of removing it

from the system.

I do shut down ZA during certain installation processes for MAJOR apps where

I trust the provider of the app. I am surprised MS does not test updates

with common 3rd party security programs. My ZA is more friendly to set and

monitor firewall security, in my experience. Very rarely does ZA cause

system or connectivity problems for me.

Hi Macc_eye, again,

My ZA version allows to put the security in the learning mode for 20 days,

which reduces the security warnings. After 20 days it wants to go into max

security, but if you get too many warnings for your appetite, you can put it

back into the learning mode.

The firewall built in Widows XP is a poor excuse for a firewall. It only

works in one direction.

I understand the Vista firewall is much better.

Here is another interesting twist. After installing the two offending

updates, I was unable to access the internet like the rest of you. I

uninstalled Service Pack 3 and rebooted. I was able to access the

internet. I also have Zone Alarm installed. At this point, I will

reinstall SP3 and just KB951978.

ZONEALARM BLOCKS INTERNET BROWSER ACCESS WITH KB951748

After updating from XP patch KB951748 ZoneAlarm can no longer interpret the

difference between programs trying to access the internet.

This causes all DNS packets to be blocked.

TEMPORARY SOLUTION

The only solution is to lower Internet Zone Security to Medium in the

Firewall options tab or disabling the Firewall.

LONG TERM SOLUTION

Uninstall KB951748, do a system restore to 2008-07-07 or wait for another

update from Microsoft or Zone Labs ZoneAlarm.

Kind Regards Ken

This update was a critical update and so before people blast at Microsoft

they should look at the reasons behind the fix.

The quick answer is to install Comodo 3 instead of ZoneAlarm.

I think you have your work cut out for you convincing most Win users on

that. Susan. :)

In another thread here I see at least one user who doesn't use ZoneAlarm,

but had the same non-connect issue after the KB951748 update. I wouldn't be

surprised if this fix has to fixed and re-offered for download.

Zone Alarm rates rather poorly here compared to other alternatives.

Online Armor has a free Version available as does Outpost.

Hi, I had the same problems like you all, n' one more :) My Java Applet was

unable to upload files to the net. Just after uninstalling that bloody

update, everything has returned to, like it was before :)

Just one question, I had updated my comp at 16:00 GMT, and as we can all

see, the issue has started early this morning. Do Mr. Getes n' his

programmers army, needs a week or a month for response to an issue like that?

:)

I'm sure that hundreds of thousands people has formatted their comps today,

some of them are keeping doing that right now to, I'm sure of that :)

Heh' god bless Google......

CU around :)

that is nonsense. Remove the KB951748 file and contact MS. They are

the problem not ZoneLabs.

BS MS is the problem. They can not build a flawless OS and they can not

create updates that do not foul up some computers. Remove KB951748.

Not too bright a move to remove the security update. Remove Zone Alarm

and either use the XP firewall, Comodo or Outpost.

I have ZoneAlarm AntiVirus installed on a Vista Home Premium (SP1) system,

installed all the updates except the MRT for July and can access the intenet

via Firefox. Don't know about IE as I do not use it. As for ZA vs Comodo,

I'll take ZA (not the free zersion) anyday over Comodo. As for Matousec,

leak tests are Madison Avenue style marketing hype. Imaginary diseases with

snake oil cures.

There is actually a third option... you can add your DNS servers to the

trusted zone.

See the following link for details:
